The Liturgy of the Palms and Morning Prayer with the Passion
April 5, 2020
Dear Friends: Palm Sunday, Holy Week and Eastertide are going to be very different in 2020 as we face together the crisis of the Covid-19 pandemic. Loving our neighbor means that this Lent we are fasting from even the Eucharist, and will not break that fast even for Easter, though at least we can sing Alleluia! We do not cease from worship however, or from caring for each other or from meeting in the ways that modern technology enables us. And so this week we enter Holy Week with the usual remembrance of Christ's triumphant entry into Jerusalem, followed quickly by his suffering and death on the cross as told to us this year in the passion narrative of St. Matthew. This Palm Sunday, we cannot distribute the usual palms, per the Diocese guidelines, but why not make a symbolic palm out of construction paper, or bring in a budding branch from your garden? We will wave whatever we have and shout Hosanna!

BULLETIN:

The Liturgy of the Palms
Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord. Peace in heaven and glory in the highest.

Let us pray: Assist us mercifully with your help, O Lord God of our salvation, that we may enter with joy upon the contemplation of those mighty acts, whereby you have given us life and immortality; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Matthew 21:1-11 (reader: Marsha Lyons)
When Jesus and his disciples had come near Jerusalem and had reached Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, "Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, just say this, `The Lord needs them.' And he will send them immediately." This took place to fulfill what had been spoken through the prophet, saying, "Tell the daughter of Zion, Look, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey." The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them; they brought the donkey and the colt, and put their cloaks on them, and he sat on them. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and that followed were shouting, "Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven! " When he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in turmoil, asking, "Who is this?" The crowds were saying, "This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee."
The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. It is right to praise you, Almighty God, for the acts of love by which you have redeemed us through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. On this day he entered the holy city of Jerusalem in triumph, and was proclaimed as King of kings by those who spread their garments and branches of palm along his way. Let these branches be for us signs of his victory, and grant that we who bear them in his name may ever hail him as our King, and follow him in the way that leads to eternal life; who lives and reigns in glory with you and the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Hymn: All Glory Laud and Honor
Refrain: All glory, laud, and honor to you, Redeemer, King, to whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring.
You are the King of Israel and David's royal Son, now in the Lord's name coming, the King and Blessed One. Refrain
The company of angels is praising you on high; and we with all creation in chorus make reply. Refrain
The people of the Hebrews with palms before you went; our praise and prayer and anthems before you we present. Refrain
To you before your passion they sang their hymns of praise; to you, now high exalted, our melody we raise. Refrain
As you received their praises, accept the prayers we bring, for you delight in goodness, O good and gracious King! Refrain

Collect: Almighty God, whose most dear Son went not up to joy but first he suffered pain, and entered not into glory before he was crucified: Mercifully grant that we, walking in the way of the cross, may find it none other than the way of life and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
.
Morning Prayer with the Passion
Opening Sentences:
Leader: Rend your hearts and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and repents of evil. Joel 2:13 People: Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my strength and my redeemer. Psalm 19:14

Invitatory and Psalter
Leader: Lord, open our lips.
People: And our mouth shall proclaim your praise.
All: Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.
Venite (unison)
Come, let us sing to the Lord; let us shout for joy to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving and raise a loud shout to him with psalms. For the Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods. In his hand are the caverns of the earth, and the heights of the hills are his also. The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands have molded the dry land. Come, let us bow down, and bend the knee, and kneel before the Lord our Maker. For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand. Oh, that today you would hearken to his voice!
Leader: The Lord is full of compassion and mercy: Come let us approach him with our confession, and adore him with a Psalm.

Psalm 95:1-7 (unison)
Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am in trouble; * my eye is consumed with sorrow, and also my throat and my belly. For my life is wasted with grief, and my years with sighing; * my strength fails me because of affliction, and my bones are consumed. I have become a reproach to all my enemies and even to my neighbors, a dismay to those of my acquaintance; * when they see me in the street they avoid me. I am forgotten like a dead man, out of mind; *I am as useless as a broken pot. For I have heard the whispering of the crowd; fear is all around; * they put their heads together against me; they plot to take my life.
Silent prayers of confession then continue...
But as for me, I have trusted in you, O Lord. * I have said, "You are my God. My times are in your hand; * rescue me from the hand of my enemies, and from those who persecute me. Make your face to shine upon your servant, *and in your loving-kindness save me."

Assurance of Pardon

First Reading: Philippians 2:5-11 (Marsha Lyons)
Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death-- even death on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Canticle 18A Song to the Lamb, Revelation 4:11;5:9-10, 13 (unison)
Splendor and honor and royal power * are yours by right, O God Most High, For you created everything that is* and by your will they were created and have their being; And yours by right, O Lamb that was slain, *for with your blood you have redeemed for God, From every family, language, people, and nation, *a royal priesthood to serve our God. And so, to the One who sits upon the throne, * and to Christ the Lamb, Be worship and praise, dominion and splendor, * for ever and for evermore.

The Passion According to Matthew (from the Diocese)

Reflections on the Passion (The Rev. Dr. Jennifer Reece)
The Apostles' Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth; I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Prayer
Leader: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
Leader: Let us pray.
All: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.

Prayer of the Day: Almighty and everliving God, in your tender love for the human race you sent your Son our Savior Jesus Christ to take upon him our nature, and to suffer death upon the cross, giving us the example of his great humility: Mercifully grant that we may walk in the way of his suffering, and also share in his resurrection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

A Collect For Sundays: O God, you make us glad with the weekly remembrance of the glorious resurrection of your Son our Lord: Give us this day such blessing through our worship of you, that the week to come may be spent in your favor; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The General Thanksgiving (unison)
Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks for all your goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all whom you have made. We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up ourselves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all ages. Amen.

Hymn: When I survey the wondrous cross
When I survey the wondrous cross where the young Prince of Glory died, my richest gain I count but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride.
Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast, save in the cross of Christ, my God: all the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to his blood.
See, from his head, his hands, his feet sorrow and love flow mingled down! Did e'er such love and sorrow meet, or thorns compose so rich a crown?
Were the whole realm of nature mine, that were an offering far too small; love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all.
Prayer of St. Chrysostom (unison) Almighty God, you have given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication to you; and you have promised through your well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name you will be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, our desires and petitions as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the age to come life everlasting. Amen.

Officiant: Let us bless the Lord.
Response: Thanks be to God.
Glory to God whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine: Glory to him from generation to generation in the Church, and in Christ Jesus for ever and ever. Amen.
