St. John’s:  

Quietside Festival on Saturday, July 16^th

Basket Raffle and Silent Auction ~ please bring your items to the church office next week.

Sign up sheets ~ are in the undercroft for working at or donating to the various booths.

Divine Luncheon – Sunday, July 24^th, 11:00-2:00, on the lawn. The luncheon benefits the Westside Food Pantry and features fresh herbs and edible flowers. Cookbook and inspirational author Katie Moose will be on hand with tastings from her books and to sell and autograph them as well. Helpers for setup, serving and/or cleanup should contact Mary Mitchell, Jean Rohrer or Dianne McMullan. 

St. John Singers – Meet the 2^nd and 4^th Monday from 5:00-6:00 to practice hymns for the upcoming services.

Farmer’s Market: Held in St. John’s parking lot each Friday during the summer from 9:00 to 1:00. Raffle tickets for Judy Taylor’s watercolor Bell House at Hockomock Head to benefit the Westside Food Pantry are on sale each Friday. (Drawing will be October 23^rd)

 

St. Saviour’s:

Meditation group for practicing together every Monday from 11:30 to 12:30 in the Parish Library; led by Sandy Haggett. This offering is for those who have some experience in meditation.

Yard Sale – July 1^st, 9:00-1:00 – Hand to hand vendables, gently used and new clothing, treats for all ages, baked goods; all at reasonable prices. 
Taizè Worship Service, July 1^st at 7:00 p.m. - Silence, Readings and Song take us away from the busyness of the day. All are welcome! Come as you are! Info: Sue, 288-4390 or Carmen, 288-2739. All are welcome: sit, stand, lie down, bring your own pillow, make yourself comfortable, take part silently or aloud.

 

Church of Our Father:

The Prodigal God: Recovering the Heart of the Christian Faith (2008), by Tim Keller, on Wednesdays at 9:00 a.m. or 6:30 p.m. Led by Holly Craighead, summer intern.  The book is based on Jesus’ parable from Luke 15 that we know as “The Prodigal Son.”  In his book, Keller opens up the mysteries of God’s amazing grace at the heart of our faith, and exposes the errors of both moral relativism and religious moralism. 

Summer Reunion: an Old Fashioned Evening at the Hulls Cove Schoolhouse, Friday, July 8.  Come at 5:30 pm; potluck supper at 6:30; dance the night away to the music of the Breakneck Boys. Donations accepted for the band and other expenses.  For more information call Joanne or Tony, 288-5193.

 

St. Mary’s and St. Jude’s:

Contemplative Prayer/Book Study – Wednesdays. Study of the Gospel of Thomas is held at St. Mary’s by-the-Sea, beginning at 4:45 p.m. Contemplative Evening Prayer (with 20 minutes of silence) begins at 5:30 pm. Led by The Rev. Patricia Rome Robertson.

The Northeast Guild for Spiritual formation presents:

Divine Wisdom in the Biblical Mystical Traditions with Rabbi Rami Shapiro, Friday, July 22^nd, 9:00 am-3:00 pm, at St. Andrew by-the Lake, Seal Cove.

 

Benefit Suppers at St. Andrew Lutheran Church, 175 Downeast Highway in Ellsworth, Friday, July 15^th, benefits Maine Migrant Health Clinic.

 

Dine-Around Day – all day on Friday, July 29: A fund raising event for Island Connections, one of MDI's most necessary, volunteer driven, non-profit organizations which endeavors to improve quality of life for senior citizens and people with disabilities.  MDI residents and visitors are encouraged to demonstrate their financial support for Island Connections by dining at participating restaurants on Dine-Around Day. How does it work?  Restaurant owners participate by contributing a portion of their Dine-Around Day receipts to Island Connections.  Some give a percentage of their receipts while others donate a flat amount.  Newspaper ads and posters will include a list of all participating restaurants.

 

Andrew Harvey, founder of The Institute for Social Activism, internationally known author, scholar, and spiritual teacher will present two evening programs on MDI:

Wednesday July 20, 6:00 p.m. at Cove End cottage, 30 Neighborhood Road, Northeast Harbor (limited to 40 people, please call 244-3445 to reserve a place). An informal talk and conversation about the 13th century poet Rumi. A free-will donation for Andrew's work is appreciated.

Thursday July 21, 8:00 p.m., St. Saviour's Church, Andrew will speak on "Sacred Activism." Suggested donation is $15.

Andrew's books include: Son of Man: The Mystical Path To Christ; The Way of Passion: A Celebration of Rumi; The Hope: A Guide To Sacred Activism; and The Return of the Mother. He also co-authored The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying.

 

The American Red Cross Blood Services is having a blood drive on Thursday, July 7^th from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the Mount Desert Elementary School. 

 

Musical Evenings:

Thursday, July 7 ~ Open rehearsal with the Arthur Russell Strings Camp (1:30-2:30) at St. John the Divine (to benefit Westside Food Pantry)

Tuesday, July 19 ~ Amos Lawrence (son of Susannah Jones) and Stephen Sampson will perform a violin and piano concert at St John’s at 7:00 p.m. as a benefit for the Westside Food Pantry. Suggested donation: $15.00.

Friday July 22 ~ Harpsichords - the art of building them and their music. Hosts: Steve and Mary Ann Mahoney. FMI contact Susan Buell at scovino@prexar.com or Stephen Sampson at ssampson@jax.org   

 

Quiet Day at the Alcyon Center will be observed Friday, July 1^st, with a slight variation on our accustomed setting.  We will begin in the main house at 9:00 AM with a reading and a silent sit for 20 minutes followed by 3 hours of silence.  At noon we will enjoy a lunch of soup and bread in the gazebo (rain or shine) down by the cove.  Beginning at 1:00 PM, those who wish to stay or for those just arriving, we will begin with a 20 minute sit at the gazebo followed by 3 hours of silence.  A Contemplative Worship Service will be held in the gazebo or on the lawn at the cove at 5:00 PM.

Thrift Shop Alert:  ECW is accepting good clean clothing and household linens for the thrift shop. Please consider supporting this ministry to our church and the Island Community. If you have not worn it the last ten years you probably won’t - make room in your closet! Bicycle Trek: On Wednesday, June 22^nd at 6:30 p.m., Pastor Blake Brown, from Southwest Harbor Congregational Church, will share the story of the bicycle trek he took during his sabbatical. He rode from Maine to Florida to raise awareness and funds for the mission program at his church. Dessert, coffee and tea will be served. All are invited to attend! 

 

St. Mary’s and St. Jude’s:

Meditation Hike: 10:30am, Thursday, June 30^th, at Great Head. Do you like to hike? Do you enjoy the silence of the forest and the ocean? Come for a different hiking experience. We will walk slowly and meditatively along a trail together in silence, pausing at particular points to listen to a reading. We will conclude our hike with prayer, followed by lunch and an opportunity to reflect on the experience. Call the Church Office (276-5588) or email Patricia Robertson revprome@roadrunner.com to register so we know you are coming. Bring your own lunch and water. Gather at the Great Head parking lot at 10:30AM. This is a short hike with some moderate climbing over rocks. We will being slowly and should return to the parking lot no later than 1PM.

Contemplative Prayer/Book Study – Wednesdays. Study is held in St. Mary’s Chapel, beginning at 4:45 p.m. Contemplative Evening Prayer (with 20 minutes of silence) begins at 5:30 pm. Led by The Rev. Patricia Rome Robertson. 

 

Bake Sale - The MDI Hospital Auxiliary will be holding a Bake Sale on Tuesday, June 28^th from 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. in front of The First on Main Street in Bar Harbor. Wednesday Scholars Group: For the next several weeks, Rev. Jenny is facilitating this group at 10:30 am, at Francis by the Sea in Blue Hill, in taking some time to share stories of their spiritual journeys. No one is obligated to participate but everyone is warmly invited to tell about their struggles and triumphs on the journey to connect with the Divine.

 

Everybody Eats, a free hot, nutritious meal offered to anyone who comes every Monday from 3-6 pm in the Parish Hall of St. Dunstan’s in Ellsworth. This program relies entirely on donations and grants. If providing a meal for a family or individual in need is something you would like to support, please send a tax deductible donation to Everybody Eats, P. O Box 776, Ellsworth ME 04605.

 

Island Connections – Volunteer drivers are needed to deliver meals and groceries, to drive neighbors to healthcare appointments, and to shopping and community centers. As MDI's population ages Island Connections is getting more requests than ever. Often it’s just a short drive to a healthcare appointment or grocery store and back.  Island Connections match neighbors' requests with drivers' availability and geographic preferences. Call Mary Parker at 288-4457 for more information.

Contra Dance - St. Saviour’s and St. John and Andrew are hosting a contra-dance on Friday June 17 from 7-10 pm. The dance will be held at St. Saviour’s in the nave. Big Moose Contra Dance Band will play lively music with Lindsay Eyesnogle, from Isleford, calling the dance. Lindsay will teach basic steps from 7:00-7:30. Beginners are welcome and encouraged to come. The event is free and refreshments will be served.
