ERD requests help for people affected by Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar: Cyclone Nargis tore through Myanmar (Burma) on May 3rd. The powerful cyclone caused tremendous damage to the country’s fertile Irrawaddy Delta region, known as the ‘rice bowl’ of the country, and in the capital, Yangon (Rangoon). So far, more than 30,000 deaths have been recorded. With more than 25,000 people still missing, the death toll is expected to rise. Over 1 million people have lost their homes. Entire villages were swept away by the force of the storm. Millions of people are in need of urgent assistance. Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD) has been working with our Anglican and ecumenical partners for several years in Myanmar. We will rely on these relationships to address the immediate needs of victims such as food, water and shelter. Once the crisis has passed, ERD will continue to work with partners to develop long-term recovery plans to rehabilitate communities and restore livelihoods.

Here is how you can help people today: Pray for the Burmese people who are suffering because of this devastating disaster. Give to help provide life-saving food and other emergency supplies for those most impacted by the cyclone, and to invest in the recovery of these devastated communities. Please send checks to: ERD/Myanmar & Cyclone Response, PO Box 7058, Merrifield, VA 22116-7058. (see bulletin insert on Sunday)
