First Coming
by Madeleine L'Engle

He did not wait till the world was ready,
till men and nations were at peace.
He came when the Heavens were unsteady,
and prisoners cried out for release.

He did not wait for the perfect time.
He came when the need was deep and great.
He dined with sinners in all their grime,
turned water into wine. He did not wait

till hearts were pure. In joy he came
to a tarnished world of sin and doubt.
To a world like ours, of anguished shame
he came, and his Light would not go out.

He came to a world which did not mesh,
to heal its tangles, shield its scorn.
In the mystery of the Word made Flesh
the Maker of the stars was born.

We cannot wait till the world is sane
to raise our songs with joyful voice,
for to share our grief, to touch our pain,
He came with Love: Rejoice! Rejoice!

Festival on Main Street in Northeast Harbor, Friday, December 10th starting at 5 p.m. Santa and Mrs. Claus arrive at the Northeast Pole, decorations abound, the Bonfire is lighted, and cheer fills the air. Delicious home-made soups are on sale at the museum. Come to the Parish Hall between 3 and 6 PM to view crèches from around the world and Gingerbread Houses made by the Sunday school children. Donations go to the Campfire Coalition to keep our neighbors warm.

Contemplative Prayer/Book Study is led by The Rev. Patricia Robertson, on Wednessdays from 5 to 6:15 pm at the Somesville Meeting House, Parish Hall. In addition to prayer, we will be learning about the contemplative perspective and life through reading interesting authors. Conversation begins at 5 pm and Contemplative Prayer (chanting, silence and prayer) at 5:45 pm. This study/prayer group is open to anyone interested, so bring your friends.

St. Saviour's Parish:

A Service for Remembering on Friday, December 10th at 5:00 PM in the Rectory Common Library. During the period between Thanksgiving and Christmas, the wonder of child birth, the gathering of family and the miracle of child-like joy can touch us deeply and also hit a raw spot. For many of us, this is a hard time when we remember those who are not with us to celebrate. We are not alone; and unless we need to be, we do not have to be alone. All are invited to celebrate the Eucharist with the special intention of thanking God for the lives of loved ones and asking God to comfort those who are grieving and those whose children have died before them. Such losses change life forever. We seek a way to remember and to go forward. We have a need to embrace grief and hope. If you have lost a child or someone else, if you feel deep emptiness, I hope that you will find time to sit still and to be embraced by God's care. Please come if you can, and pray for those who have died, for all who grieve and for those who have lost a child.

Lessons and Carols for Advent and Christmas, December 19, 10:00 a.m. This service, modeled on the one from King's College, will include 9 lessons with appropriate carols and several anthems. This is a "Singers' Service," full of both treasured music from the past as well as music written as recent as last year. It is a meaningful event and a blessed way to begin the week before Christmas.

St. John's:

The church office is open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 8:30-2:30. If you have questions or need assistance at other times, please call Ted Fletcher (244-3115) or Ann Cox Halkett (288-5832).

Bullets from the November 18 Vestry Meeting:

· A special parish meeting is set for December 12 to consider changes to the by-laws.

· The Nominating Committee (Ann Cox Halkett, Ida Smallidge, and Joan Bromage) is asking members of the parish with an interest in serving on the vestry to contact them. You may also nominate others.

· Barbara Campbell needs to resign as chairman of the Westside Food Pantry by the first of the year to accompany husband Mark to the Mayo Clinic for a medical work-up. Ongoing leadership will emerge from the Food Pantry board, but Barbara deserves accolades for her outstanding tenure.

· After consultation with the altar guild and flower arrangers, we will move ahead with a new sink and faucets for the sacristy.
