St. John’s second annual Christmas Fair: Saturday, November 28th from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  There will be crafts, food and wreaths for sale. Chili, hot dogs, and tuna rolls will be served between 11:00 and 1:00. Please call Mary Mitchell at 244-9951 if you have questions. If you have plastic containers, please bring them to the church.

 

 

Holden Evening Prayer: Wednesday, December 9 at 7:00 p.m. St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Ellsworth invites you to join us for a beautiful sung vespers service.  Come a bit earlier, at 6:00 p.m. and have a simple supper and enjoy a time of Advent fellowship. FMI:  667-7641

 

Bar Harbor Congregational Church’s Annual Christmas Fair: December 4th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  There will be a luncheon, Attic Treasures, Baked Goods, Crafts, and several raffles.

 

Gift cards suitable for Christmas gifts, hostess gifts, and any other giving are available again this fall for a $10 donation to the Westside Food Pantry. This year they will feature small original watercolor designs on the envelopes. Cards may be purchased at the church office or by calling Cass Wright at 244-5459.

 

Be an Angel: Looking to the Christmas Season, the Westside Food Pantry will be organizing Christmas Dinners in cooperation with the Southwest Harbor Food Mart.  We are also beginning the process of signing up our client’s children for the Angel Tree.  This heartwarming project that is sponsored by the First National Bank has become a Westside holiday tradition.  Please stop in to the Main Street branch of “The First” to choose a name (and become someone’s Angel).

Diaper Drive for St. Elizabeth’s Essentials Pantry: November 22nd. Glad to be out of the stage of life where you have to deal with diapers? Smack in the middle of the stage of life when expensive diapers are a daily necessity? Either way, show your gratefulness on the Sunday prior to Thanksgiving by collecting diapers for the many families with kids in diapers who depend on St. Elizabeth’s Essential Pantry. Monetary contributions may also be made to St. John with the notation St. Elizabeth Diaper Day. Diapers may be dropped off at the back of the church. Joan and Ted will see they are transported to Portland.

Canned Goods: cranberry sauce, gravy, yellow or green vegetables, yams or sweet potatoes, olives, pickles, pineapple

Boxed or Bagged: biscuit mix, stuffing, sweet bread mix

Place items in the “Stuff the Turkey” box in the back pew. Checks should be made out to “Westside Food Pantry” and noted for Thanksgiving Dinners.

Thanksgiving Taize Service: There will be a Taize service at Somesville Union Meeting House this Sunday, November 22nd at 5:00 p.m.

 

Conscious Loving Presence: Paul Weiss, Director of the Whole Health Center, will present a Radical Look at the Teachings of Jesus on December 5th at the Whole Health Center in Bar Harbor from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Cost is $65. For information and to register, call 288-4128. More information is on the bulletin board in the undercroft.

Serendipity, Bar Harbor's clothing re-sale shop in Hulls Cove, is looking for volunteers! Volunteers are needed for shifts during store hours (Wednesdays and Thursdays 10-2 and Fridays and Saturdays 10-4) to sort and arrange merchandise and help out at the sales desk. Some tasks can be completed during non-business hours. Please call Kate Maginn at 288-3375 for information.

 

Thank You from the Bean Ladies: Mary, Jean and Dianne would like to thank everyone who made the second Annual Bean Supper a success. Signs and banner, table setters, cash donations, bakers, and kitchen crew: Ted and Joan Bromage, The Friday Morning Men’s breakfast group, Liz and Eric Erickson, Anne Wetzel, Peggy Walls, Karen Craig, Lee Worster, Ann Cox Halkett, Chloe and Scott Hatcher, B.J. The parish of St. Andrew & St. John cordially invite you and your family to celebrate the In-gathering of Pledges for 2010 tomorrow (November 15th) at a brunch following the 8:00 a.m. service.

 

This Sunday, November 15th, we welcome Emily Blair Stribling as our celebrant. She is a poet, teacher, lay preacher, retreat leader, and recipient of the American Book Award. Emily has served as Poet-In-Residence at Wesley Theological Seminary, led programs at the Washington National Cathedral, served as lay pastoral associate at St. John’s Norwood Parish, and her poems have appeared in many magazines and anthologies. Recently retired, Emily and her husband Robert now live in Brooklin, Maine.

Baked Bean Supper – Saturday, November 7th, 5:30-7:00 p.m., St. John's Undercroft. Donation is $8/person (children under 5 free). The menu includes beans, hotdogs, sausage, bread, Cole slaw, drinks and pie. Proceeds will benefit Westside Food Pantry. To help cook, make pies, set up, serve, clean up or for more information contact Mary Mitchell (244-9951), Dianne McMullan (244-4582, 266-8052) or Jean Rohrer (jeanrohrer@mac.com).
 
Life-Giving Hospice: Rose Mary Dougherty (author, teacher, senior fellow at the Shalem Institute) will give a free evening talk on "Being with the Dying: A Life Changing Experience" on Monday, November 9th, 6:30-8:00. She will also conduct a daylong workshop "Learning about Living by Being with the Dying" on Tuesday, November 10th, 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. There is a $25 fee for the workshop which includes lunch. Both events take place at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Ellsworth, 121 Bucksport Road. For registration and further info, please contact Hospice of Hancock County, 667-2531.
 
American Red Cross Blood Drive: Thursday, November 12th at MDI High School in the gym from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
 
FALL CLEAN-UP AT ST. JOHN'S – SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 14 at 8:30 AM—Please Bring Rakes! The gardeners have done such a terrific job with the grounds this year that clean-up should be pretty easy. We'll just need to take care of the leaves. The Sawyer house will need to be cleaned up as well. If anyone can stay a little longer on the 14th, that would be a great time to start!   Coffee pot will be on at 8 AM.  Call Joan  (244-3227) if you think you can make it, or with any questions.  THANKS TO ALL! 
 
Christmas Bazaar: Saturday, November 14, 9:00-3:30, at St. Andrew Lutheran Church, Ellsworth. There will be baked goods, gift baskets, gently used Christmas decorations, lunch, fairly traded handcrafts from artisans from 34 countries, in developing regions around the world.
 
Ingathering Brunch:  Sunday, November 15 -- Following the  10:00 AM Eucharist.   Please come to celebrate together the generosity of the members of our parish who are once again digging deep to sustain for another year the mission and operations of our church.
