Hope for Haitiart show and sale featuring the work of Haitian artists, May 28–31 at the Redfield Gallery in Northeast Harbor. Opening reception will be held Friday from 5–7 pm. Proceeds benefit the artists as well as the Episcopal Church in Haiti which is working to recover from the January earthquake through tent cities, the provision of food and medical assistance, and the reestablishment of its various schools. Please welcome the spirit of Haiti into your home or workplace with the purchase of one of these wonderful works.

Cynthia Bourgeault, "Putting on the Mind of Christ"—Thursday, June 3rd, 9:00 am - 3:00 pm at St. Andrew’s, Seal Cove. The Rev. Dr. Cynthia Bourgeault is an Episcopal priest, retreat leader, and widely recognized as one of the foremost teachers of Centering Prayer. She is the author of several books, including Centering Prayer and Inner Awakening and The Wisdom Jesus. Cost: $50, including refreshments and snacks. Please bring your lunch.

Embracing an Inclusive and respectful Community – Last Monday a couple of COA students were the victims of bias-motivated vandalism in their apartment. Swastikas and racial and ethnic slurs defaced their personal property. The college community is organizing a community potluck/picnic on COA's north lawn on Wednesday May 26th from 5:30-7 pm so that together we can stand in solidarity with the victims, celebrate our racial, religious, and other differences, and embrace an inclusive and respectful community, not just at COA but in Bar Harbor and on the island.  Given the recent local news coverage of the swastikas on Tremont property, we felt that this would be best as an island-wide community event. A film will be shown in the lecture hall, and one of the students is organizing children's activities. It would be great to have as many community members there as possible.

Bishopswood Open House -- Sunday, June 6, 11 am - 2 pm.

Family Contra Dance at Bishopswood! Sunday, May 30, 3-5 pm. Live Music, Caller, Fun for All! The Belfast Bay Fiddlers, with caller Chrissy Fowler, will perform at a contra dance to benefit Bishopswood in our own Bishopswood Great Hall!  Come to dance or just enjoy the music and, of course, Sandy's famous snacks. Bring a lunch, meet staff and campers, tour Bishopswood and enjoy some of Sandy's delicious snacks!  Please come!

May 25 – St. John Singers at 5:30 p.m.

June 2 – Westside Food Pantry Wrap Up at 5:30 p.m.

Cass Wright has created an email group to send to those who would like to be informed of the garden's progress, those who might have suggestions, and those who might like to help. The garden has been expanded and we will be working with two children's groups--so there is lots to do. If you would like to be added to the email group please call (244-5459) or email Cass363@gmail.com. Any level of involvement will be very much appreciated.

News from Bill and Tina Baker: Bill and Tina have written to say how much they appreciate all the calls, cards, and good wishes. They feel they are being well taken care of at Hope Lodge, a facility sponsored by the American Cancer Society, in Baltimore. Some weeks have been better than others, they write, but Bill is doing well, and they are making the most of being near their daughters and exploring Baltimore - a city they describe as "gritty and attractive at the same time." We send them our love and best wishes.

Serendipity, a Clothing Resale Shop where 100% of the proceeds benefit the Bar Harbor Food Pantry. Saturday May 15th marks their one year anniversary. Some fun events are planned to celebrate this milestone, as a way to say thank you! The shop will be open from 10-4 with lots of good stuff to share. There will be a table with coffee, tea and cold beverages, as well as some delicious treats made by volunteers and other friends. There will be balloons for all of the kiddos. With every purchase, customers will be given an opportunity to save on their next visit. And winner of the raffle will be announced at the end of the day! What's the raffle? Well, starting this week, tickets will be sold for $1 (or $5 for 6) for a very elegant and delicate pair of diamond and garnet earrings (valued at $125 by a local jeweler!) This will be a fun way to help raise a little more money for the pantry and what a great gift for a loved one or for yourself!

Ministry Opportunity at Sonogee: St. Andrew & St. John is one of 13 MDI churches taking part in a program, capably organized by Jack Drake, providing a Sunday morning service at Sonogee. This ministry began 30 years ago as one of several programs of the Council of Churches of The Islands, Inc. At the onset, the services were conducted at MDI hospital, in their Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF). When the SNF and two small local nursing homes were replaced by two brand new state-of-the-art nursing facilities, the services were moved to Summit House and Sonogee. The importance of these services is underscored by the fact that they have outlasted all the Council's other outreach programs, one of the nursing homes and the Council itself.

Would you like to be part of this ministry? You are more than welcome! St. Andrew & St. John is responsible for a service every three months. We need people that would be willing to lead the service, take part in the service, or just be with the residents.

St. John's next service at Sonogee is Sunday, May 16th. Let Michael Shook (244-4425) know if you'd like to participate.

Harbor House Event: Saturday, May 15th from 10-2 at the Hancock County Airport. "Touch a Truck" will benefit Harbor House Children's Center and the Westside Food Pantry. A fun filled family event that includes more than 30 big rigs, rescue vehicles, and a bi-plane. $5/person; $20/family. For more info, call 244-3713.

Acadia Fiber Fair: Saturday, May 22nd, from 9-4 in Southwest Harbor. A full day of fun with fiber including classes, demonstrations, and vendors. Check the website for more details: www.acadiafiberfaire.com

Common Good Soup Kitchen: Saturday night, May 22nd, from 6-9 at 566 Seawall Road. Soups and salads, kid friendly food, fresh baked pizza and cookies, live music and balloon hats. No fee, but contribute what you can. Fund raiser for the kitchen's utility costs and continuing weekly soup production. 266-2733.

Card Ministry: Joan Bromage has agreed to coordinate the sending of the monthly cards to parishioners and friends. If you know of anyone who might appreciate a note, please let her know.

Saturday, May 22 at the Abbe Museum - Music by the Sea Concert Series: Wabanaki Traditional Music from 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm FREE with price of regular admission - Abbe Museum Downtown. Passamaquoddy tribal members, Blanch Sockabasin and Wayne Newell will perform traditional music in the acoustically unique Circle of Four Directions Gallery. Different from the sounds of the big drum or pow wow style of music, traditional Wabanaki music is made with a hand drum and a shaker. Blanch and Wayne grew up listening to traditional music and enjoy playing for others as a way of passing on their traditions. Both are fluent speakers of the Passamaquoddy language and have performed their music throughout Maine, for the collections of the Library of Congress, and on the Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC. For more information contact the Abbe at 288-3519 or info@abbemuseum.org.

The church office will be closed until May 20th. If you have questions or need assistance, please call Ted Fletcher (244-3115) or Ann Cox Halkett (288-5832).
