QUIETSIDE FESTIVAL: Saturday, July 11th, 10:00-3:00. Bring your items to the church office for the following booths…Basket Raffle, Boutique, Treasure Trove, Plants, Silent Auction, Handicrafts, and Pies. Call the office (244-3229), Ted Bromage (244-3227) or Mary Mitchell (244-9951) if you wish to donate or help in any way.

 

 

Prayer Shawl Ministry: This group will be meeting on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month in the Undercroft at 2:30. Knitters and Crocheters are welcome. Next meeting will be July 14th.

 

Map of the Soul: Wednesday, July 22 at 5:00 p.m. in the Mellon Room of the Northeast Harbor Library. William Bigelow, a fourth year candidate-in-training at the C.G. Jung Institute of Boston, will give a public talk entitled “Carl Jung’s Map of The Soul.” Admission is free. All are welcome. Dr. Jung was particularly interested in the power of image, symbol, and myth in psychological healing and wholeness.

 

Dr. David Servan-Schreiber, bestselling author of Anticancer: A New Way Of Life, will speak about his book and the vast number of ways you can change your everyday actions to inhibit cancer cell development. He is the clinical professor of psychiatry and cofounder of the Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, cofounder of Doctors Without Borders, and a 15 year brain cancer survivor. This event, brought to the community by MDI Hospital in association with the Beth C. Wright Cancer Center, will be held on Tuesday, July 28th at 6:00 p.m. at the Gates Auditorium, College of the Atlantic. Dr. Servan-Schreiber will provide a question and answer period, and participate in a book signing after the event. Seating is limited for this special event. “Everyone Eats” Program—Drop By Sometime – We encourage you all to stop by and enjoy a bite to eat and conversation on Monday’s from 3:00 to 7:00 during the free community meal program held at the St. Dunstan’s parish hall, 134 State St., Ellsworth. The meals vary from week to week (including one vegetarian dish) and are usually served with bread, cheese, fruit, desserts and more. Meals can be eaten in or taken home. The meal is sponsored by a committee of volunteers, churches, and community agencies. There is no charge, no fee, and ALL are welcome, so if you’re in the neighborhood, stop by for a quick bite! Concert: Sunday August 9 at 5 p.m.  St. John's will host a concert in memory of Melba Wilson who died in February.  Melba was long time Executive Director of the Arcady Music Festival and the Center for Human Genetics.  Participants will include Arcady Festival performers and youth competition winners who are now pursuing professional musical careers.  You are encouraged to attend this varied and exciting program which will be followed by a reception. Eleanor Watts will be happy to answer any questions about the concert and is looking for volunteers to help with the reception.  She can be reached at 244-3699 or by e/mail at bhgables@aol.com.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL AT ST. JOHN’S OFF AND RUNNING RAIN OR SHINE: Despite the forecast, 16 registered children from Hulls Cove, Swan’s Island, and our own backyard gathered in the undercroft for this year’s VBS.  The week is set with activities, crafts, music, outings and fellowship.  Camp begins each day at 9am with lunch at 12:30 pm.  Field trips leave at 1:00 pm and return to the church at 3:00 pm.  If you are interested in helping in whatever capacity, you are more than welcome.  Please contact Pamela VanWechel at 244-4037.

Food Pantry Vegetable Plot: As we all know, it takes work to make a garden grow and now that our Food Pantry garden is underway at St. John’s, I am asking for volunteers to help with the care of the plot that will provide fresh vegetables for those in need this summer. Please call Cass Wright (244-5459) if you are willing to take part in this important ministry.

 

 

Lean and Green Series: Wednesday, June 17th at 7:00 p.m. in the undercroft. Reduce your energy dependence, saving both money and the air we all breathe. This month – Solar Hot Water systems. Step outside in the warm sun and find ways to allow it to help heat your home or domestic hot water.

Pre-General Convention Gatherings around the Diocese: As July approaches and Mainers gear up for the 76th General Convention of The Episcopal Church in Anaheim, California, the Maine deputation will hold a number of regional conversations with Maine Episcopalians.  Topics covered will include issues, legislation and other topics to be taken up at General Convention and the implications for the Episcopal Church in Maine and with wider Anglican Communion.  All are welcome.

Choral Evensong to celebrate St. John's (Bangor) 175th Anniversary Saturday, June 20th. High Tea at 3:30 p.m. and Choral Evensong at 5 p.m., with Bishop Steve preaching.

 

Pre-Quietside Festival Garage Sale: Friday and Saturday, June 19 & 20 at Priscilla Trafton’s garage, 40 Seal Cove Road, 8:00-5:00.

$20 on the 20th   How about enjoying a Spring Bean Supper at St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church’s on Saturday June 20th, 4:30-6:30.  You can use a portion of that $20 to enjoy some great food while sharing it with some great folks…and help support community outreach programs.

Thursday, June 25 11:30 am. Benefit Architectural Tour and Luncheon. St. Saviour's Episcopal Church is the oldest, largest and tallest public building on MDI.  Established in 1878, St. Saviour's is graced by forty-two stained-glass windows created over a span of more than a century.  The windows range is date from 1886 to 1992.  There are ten beautiful examples of Louis Comfort Tiffany's technique and artistry at St. Saviour's as well as a number of more formal English stained glass windows and a variety of historic memorials. The tour of St. Saviour's will be followed by a luncheon of crabmeat rolls, chicken salad sandwiches, green salad, fresh fruit, cake and beverages.  Guests will enjoy beautiful background music by harpist Marsha Lyons during lunch. $20 per person donation will benefit the "feed the hungry" outreach programs of St. Saviour's including the annual Easter Dinner Basket project, contributions to the Congregational Church Thanksgiving Basket project, financial support to the Bar Harbor and Westside Food Pantries, Christmas for Kids program and Free Community Dinner. Seafood Ketch Restaurant in Bass Harbor is hosting a “Wine Day” each Wednesday in June from 3:00-5:00 p.m. Price is $10/person, which includes wine and appetizers. This Wednesday, June 10th, the restaurant will donate $5/person to the Westside Food Pantry.

Stay for dinner and the other $5 will be credited towards your dinner entrée.

 

Friday, June 12 at noon - Bert Coble Singers Concert  - Free and open to the public!  

Tennessee chamber choir, The Bert Coble Singers, will present a free noontime concert at historic St. Saviour’s Episcopal Church, Friday, June 12 as part of the Singers’ 8th concert tour to North America.  All are welcome and no reservations are needed. The group is directed by Dr. Bert Coble, Professor Emeritus of Cumberland University in Tennessee. For this tour, Dr. Coble has assembled a small chamber choir who will perform a 40-minute acapella concert of sacred music including works from Palestrina, Handel, Mozart, and Schubert.

Commando turned healer to speak: Noted Episcopal priest and healer, and former member of the Royal Marine Commandos, the Rev. Nigel Mumford, will teach on Thursday, June 11 from 6 to 8 p.m. at St. Matthew's, Lisbon, and at a healing conference, "The Resurrection of the Forgotten Touch," at Acadia Christian School in Trenton on June 12 and 13. The June 11 Lisbon event is free and open to the public.  The following weekend healing conference in Trenton is $15 and reservations can be made by contacting Church of Our Father, 288-4849 or shalomcoof@myfairpoint.net .
