We distributed $16,210 in vouchers in March. This was a 2% drop from last year's March distribution. 279 neighbors (189 adults, 90 children) from 210 households received the vouchers. I was asked recently to what I attributed the decline in this year's number of neighbors receiving vouchers. It is a small decline and I continue to believe that both increases and decreases in the numbers of neighbors we serve is attributable to a yearly turnover of about 20% in our Pantry clients. In any given year approximately 20% of our previous year's recipients do not return to the Pantry for various reasons, including moving from the area and changed economic circumstances. This year new registrations have not caught up with those who no longer have need for the Pantry's assistance. For instance, yesterday, the second March distribution Sunday, two persons who came to the Pantry last year did not return for vouchers until the fifth month of the season. And, earlier in the season, a man returned his ID card to me when he came into a family inheritance and after six years of coming the Pantry no longer needs our help. These are the "numbers stories" that often lead in my monthly reports. Just as important as the number of neighbors who are helped by the dollars we are enabled to distribute however, is the hospitality and caring that "neighbors-helping-neighbors" extend every Sunday that we open the Pantry. The simple and patient caring that is extended by our volunteers on Sundays makes the Pantry a warm and welcoming refuge in our community--a place where people are treated with dignity. Yesterday, a woman who had spent a very emotional weekend trying to save the life of a family dog, and had just minutes before received word that the dog had died at the emergency veterinary hospital came into the Pantry with tears flowing down her face. She was able to sit at the check-in and voucher tables and share her grief with neighbors who listened. Neighbors come together on Sundays to distribute more than just vouchers, they distribute care and compassion as well. That makes for a neighborhood I value. The Pantry will be open on Sundays, April 1, from 12:00-2:00 p.m. and April 15 from 12:00-1:00 p.m. | | Services at the Partnership Parishes: Worship during Holy Week on MDI Sunday, March 25: The Sunday of the Passion Liturgy of the Palms and Holy Eucharist 9:00 am at St. John's, Southwest Harbor 9:00 am St. Mary and St. Jude, Northeast Harbor 10:00 am at St. Saviour's, Bar Harbor 10:00 am Church of Our Father, Hulls Cove Tuesday, March 27 8:30 am Morning Prayer at St. Saviour's Wednesday, March 28 8 am Holy Eucharist at Church of Our Father, Hulls Cove 12 Noon Holy Eucharist at St. Saviour's Thursday, March 29: Maundy Thursday 8:30 am Morning Prayer at St. Saviour's 7:00 pm at St. Saviour's, Bar Harbor (joint service) Holy Eucharist with footwashing Friday, March 30: Good Friday Solemn Liturgy 7:00 pm at St. John's, Southwest Harbor (joint service) Saturday, March 31: The Great Vigil of Easter 7:00 pm at St. Mary's by-the-Sea, Northeast Harbor (joint service) Sunday, April 1: Easter Day 9:00 am at St. Mary's Chapel, Northeast Harbor 10:00 am at St. John's, Southwest Harbor 10:00 am at St. Saviour's, Bar Harbor 10:00 am at Church of Our Father, Hulls Cove | | | |
