October 30: Vestry Meeting
Would you and a friend be interested in being the next organizer of the forums to begin after Christmas? Contact Tim and Kathleen and they will be happy to help.
Meditation on Thursdays at 4:00 at St. John’s. Please join us for 30 minutes of shared silence and “prayer of the heart,” an ancient meditative practice of the Christian tradition. All are welcome! We meditate sitting on chairs, though if you prefer to sit on the floor, feel free to bring a mat or cushion. If you are new to meditation, have questions or concerns, or would like more information, please contact Mother Kathleen.
Free Community Lasagna Supper with ice cream sundaes for dessert! Sponsored by The Common Good Community and Parish of St. Andrew & St. John on Friday, November 4 at 5:30 p.m. at St. John’s Church. Come and enjoy the food and company! Questions? 244-3229. If you would like to help, call Karen Craig, 244-5267; we need salads, breads, and vegetables to accompany the lasagna.
St. John and St. Saviour:
Video recordings of Fr. Tim’s sermons are now available at www.StAndrewStJohn.blogspot.com – the most recent posted on the home page, and prior Sundays archived under “Sermon videos online” in the archive listing on the left. If you have to miss a Sunday, if you are away for the season, or if you just want to listen again to try to figure out what he was talking about, this is a great way to stay in touch. You can also find the sermons Tim+ preaches at St. Saviour at www.StSaviours.me
Confidential Prayer Chain: Unlike our published prayer lists, prayer requests that come into the Prayer Chain remain private to the prayer chain itself, which will pray devotedly for one week unless an updated request is made. If you’d like to know more about this or our Pastoral Care Team, please contact our office administrators or Mother Kathleen.
St. Saviour:
Holy Eucharist is celebrated on Wednesdays at noon in the Chapel, in a simple, non-musical service. We plan to commemorate saints and seasons using the church’s published calendar, as well as focusing on healing for ourselves and for the world.
All Hallow’s Eve Service: Sunday, October 30th, at 4:30 PM. All Hallows Eve or Halloween as we commonly know it dates back to the ancient Celts who marked their new year—the end of the harvest season and beginning of winter—with the celebration of the festival Samhain, a “thin” time when the boundary or divide of the natural and supernatural was more transparent and palpable. The souls of the dead were said to return to their homes and large bonfires set aflame to frighten away evil spirits. With the Christianization of the British Isles this pagan holy day became known as All Saints Day, a commemoration of the holy community of God and the spiritual bond between all the living and dead, those remembered and also forgotten. The celebration of All Saints traditionally begins with a vigil the night before. All are welcome to an All Hallows’ Eve meditative service of light, music, readings, a procession to the town cemetery, and special prayers that anticipate and celebrate this porous moment of time and communion. Refreshments and fellowship to follow.
