Saturday, June 7:   Bob and Tim invite everyone at St. Andrew/St. John and St. Saviour’s to a “Thank You Party” on Saturday 7 June 2014 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Acadia Repertory Theater (Masonic Hall) in Somesville.   This gathering is a gift from Bob and Tim for two years of shared ministry.   Bring nothing but yourselves!   Hors d’oeuvres, wine, and soft drinks will be available during a time of fellowship.

 

Pentecost SundaySunday, June 8, is Pentecost Sunday:   the celebration of the gift of the Holy Spirit to the apostles and the traditional founding of the Church.   St. Andrew & St. John will be gathering for a SINGLE SERVICE OF HOLY COMMUNION AT 9:00 a.m. with special guest musicians and Jazz-flavored music, followed by a festive brunch to celebrate the birthday of the Church as well as the 90th birthday of our beloved sister Susannah Jones.   In lieu of gifts, Susannah has requested donations toward a tree to be planted in her name at St. John’s.   This will also be our last chance to worship together before the opening of St. Andrew on June 15.

 

Forum on Sunday, June 1, 8:30 a.m. – Fred Benson will lead a discussion entitled:   Capital Punishment – Suitable or Sinful?  Public reaction to a horribly flawed execution in Oklahoma last month has led numerous government officials, including President Obama, to call for a thorough review of the nation’s capital punishment regimen.   Fred will frame both sides of the issue and suggest a solution that reflects the growing national concern about state-sponsored executions.

 

Upcoming recital – Mark your calendars now:   Permelia Sears (organist), her husband David and daughter Rebecca (performers) will present a recital at St. John's on Tuesday, 17 June 2014 at 7:00 p.m. to benefit the Westside Food Pantry.   Permelia Singer Sears is a graduate of Smith College and Yale University School of Music with master's degree in pipe organ performance.
 

Wednesday Explorers – Vesta Kowalski will be offering an adult education opportunity on Wednesday mornings from 10:00-11:30, beginning June 4, at St. John’s in the Common Room. Each week participants will explore a different topic, and anyone is welcome to come once, occasionally, or regularly. Suggested topics include sermon reviews, previews of the coming lectionary, discussions on comparative religion and being a Christian in a secular world, book discussions . . . At the first session on June 4 we will talk about the Gospel of Matthew, the source of most of the Gospel readings for the rest of the year, and will develop a schedule of topics for the next several weeks.

 

St. John’s Annual Yard Sale is ON!

This year the yard sale will be held at St. Andrew’s by the Lake, 1358 Tremont Road, Seal Cove, Friday and Saturday, June 13 and 14, 8:00-3:00.

Dear Friends in Christ: 

As most of you know by now, Canon Vicki Wiederkehr will be stepping down from her diocesan ministry at the end of June. Vicki has ministered to us with compassion and skill for more than seventeen years, and we will celebrate her ministry on Saturday, June 21, 2014, at St. Mark's Church in Waterville.  Worship will begin at 11AM followed by a simple reception in the parish hall.

I want to invite any and all who wish to join in the celebration. In order to make proper arrangements for hospitality and food, the favor of a reply is requested by June 14, 2014. I know that Saturdays in June are very busy, so if you are not able to be present, I ask you to remember Vicki in thought and prayer during this time of transition.    

In lieu of gifts, Vicki has requested that donations be made to the Frederick B. Wolf Fund for the Continuing Education of the Laity.  The education of lay leadership for ministry is one of Vicki's enduring passions. On Sunday, June 1, at 2:00 PM you are invited to help plant raised flower beds at Sonogee Rehabilitation and Living Center, 131 Eden Street, Bar Harbor. These flower beds are reserved for the use of residents' families and friends and not a part of the landscaping planted by the Sonogee grounds crew. This Sunday we welcome the Reverend Bruce Torrey to worship with us.  He speaks for those who have no voice – The Third World destitute served by Food For The Poor, an interdenominational ministry providing food, clothing, medical care, housing and economic development programs in the Caribbean and Latin America.  Fr. Torrey travels throughout the US introducing people of The First World to the people of The Third World.  Bruce brings 31 years of experience in parish ministry in the dioceses of Long

Island NY, Rochester NY and Connecticut, including a number of mission trips to Central American and the Caribbean, to his vocation of begging for the poor.

 

Bruce and his wife Kathi are blessed with 5 children; Emma, who is still in high school, and four adult children, Mark, Rebecca, Kate and David, who all live in the northeast.  Bruce and Kathi live in the Hudson River Valley of New York State.  Bruce enjoys playing folk music, camping, hiking (particularly in the Catskill and Adirondack Mountains) and spending time with his family.  Jo, their Border Collie, is named for "Mount Jo" in the High Peaks of the Adirondack Mountains.

Island Quilters Guild’s Annual Quilt Show: Saturday, May 24, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Somesville Fire House. Admission is $3.00 which includes a free potholder. On display will be bed quilts, wall hangings, table toppers and their 2014 pro-bono quilt (made for the Northeast Harbor Nursing Association).
