This Sunday we welcome the Reverend Bruce Torrey to worship with us.  He speaks for those who have no voice – The Third World destitute served by Food For The Poor, an interdenominational ministry providing food, clothing, medical care, housing and economic development programs in the Caribbean and Latin America.  Fr. Torrey travels throughout the US introducing people of The First World to the people of The Third World.  Bruce brings 31 years of experience in parish ministry in the dioceses of Long

Island NY, Rochester NY and Connecticut, including a number of mission trips to Central American and the Caribbean, to his vocation of begging for the poor.

Bruce and his wife Kathi are blessed with 5 children; Emma, who is still in high school, and four adult children, Mark, Rebecca, Kate and David, who all live in the northeast.  Bruce and Kathi live in the Hudson River Valley of New York State.  Bruce enjoys playing folk music, camping, hiking (particularly in the Catskill and Adirondack Mountains) and spending time with his family.  Jo, their Border Collie, is named for "Mount Jo" in the High Peaks of the Adirondack Mountains.

Wednesday Explorers – Vesta Kowalski will be offering an adult education opportunity on Wednesday mornings from 10:00-11:30, beginning June 4, at St. John’s in the Common Room. Each week participants will explore a different topic, and anyone is welcome to come once, occasionally, or regularly. Suggested topics include sermon reviews, previews of the coming lectionary, discussions on comparative religion and being a Christian in a secular world, book discussions . . . At the first session on June 4 we will talk about the Gospel of Matthew, the source of most of the Gospel readings for the rest of the year, and will develop a schedule of topics for the next several weeks.

Pentecost SundaySunday, June 8, is Pentecost Sunday:   the celebration of the gift of the Holy Spirit to the apostles and the traditional founding of the Church.   St. Andrew & St. John will be gathering for a SINGLE SERVICE OF HOLY COMMUNION AT 9:00 a.m. with special guest musicians and Jazz-flavored music, followed by a festive brunch to celebrate the birthday of the Church as well as the 90th birthday of our beloved sister Susannah Jones.   In lieu of gifts, Susannah has requested donations toward a tree to be planted in her name at St. John’s.   This will also be our last chance to worship together before the opening of St. Andrew on June 15.

Upcoming recital – Mark your calendars now:   Permelia Sears (organist), her husband David and daughter Rebecca (performers) will present a recital at St. John's on Tuesday, 17 June 2014 at 7:00 p.m. to benefit the Westside Food Pantry.   Permelia Singer Sears is a graduate of Smith College and Yale University School of Music with master's degree in pipe organ performance.
