Please join us in celebration, promise, and hope as we mark this day, our accomplishments, and look forward to Advent! | | At St. John's Westside Food Pantry: It was a busy and smoothly operating distribution Sunday, November 5, at Harbor House! 289 persons were served (219 adults and 70 children); that represents 159 households in the three towns we serve. $12,330 worth of vouchers were distributed and 11 new households comprised of 25 neighbors were registered. Thanks to the volunteers and good preparations we were able to get everyone into the new season's distribution without major delays. Deep gratitude to: Kathleen Killian, Jayne Ashworth, Ida Smallidge, Dot Mead, Edie Stanwood, Teresa McGowen, Vivian Chambers, Nancy Cochran, Patsy Fogarty, Gen McKenzie, Carroll Fernald, Jim Vekasi, Carol Nelson, and Dean Henry. Your welcoming and caring spirit made us aware that we are neighbors indeed. In addition to writing 1,233 vouchers, orders were received for 84 Thanksgiving Food Baskets. This leads me to the following announcement and appeal: As in years past, the Bar Harbor Congregational Church is putting together Thanksgiving Food Baskets for MDI, and the Westside Food Pantry will serve as the distribution agent for the west side of MDI, as well as supply the meat for those baskets. This event requires some extra help before Thanksgiving, and I'm placing my annual call for your assistance. Here's how you can help: Monday, November 20, 12 Noon, pick up Thanksgiving Baskets at BHCC Vehicles are needed to travel to Bar Harbor and pick-up the baskets for the west side, vehicles loaded, and return to the Fire Station in SWH to be unloaded. Time required: about 1.5 hours. This year we will have vehicle loaders and unloaders. So, if you are unable to lift and carry the baskets, we will have help. Please reply to Dean Henry (dean_henry27@gmail.com) with the type vehicle you can supply. Tuesday, November 21, 10 AM to 12 Noon, help distribute the Thanksgiving Baskets This work involves sorting baskets and distributing the baskets to neighbors on Tuesday from the SWH Fire Station. Advent Book Study: Let Every Heart Prepare For centuries the words and poetry of our hymns have spoken deeply to us. Many people find that what is heard in poetry and music sinks deeper into the soul than does ordinary prose. And so it is to the beautiful seasonal hymns that the Reverend Barbara Cawthorne Crafton turns for inspiration for daily meditations on faith, prayer, forgiveness, and healing during Advent and Christmas. All four Episcopal Parishes will be reading this book, and we'll be joining in worship and study at 4:30 on Wednesdays: December 6 at Church of our Father; December 13 at St. John's; and December 20 at St. Saviour's. Meditation on Tuesdays at 4:00 at St. John's. Please join us for 30 minutes of shared silence and "prayer of the heart," an ancient meditative practice of the Christian tradition. All are welcome! We meditate sitting on chairs, though if you prefer to sit on the floor, feel free to bring a mat or cushion. If you are new to meditation, have questions or concerns, or would like more information, please contact Mother Kathleen. Pastoral Care and Prayer Team Gathering Upcoming!
