The following is the transcript of the Presiding Bishop’s Christmas message.

Christmas Message 2015

Hello. Our original plan was for me to tape a Christmas message in front of the United Nations building in New York as a way of sending a message that this Jesus of Nazareth whom we follow came to show us the way to a different world, a world rounded in God’s peace and God’s justice, God’s love and God’s compassion.

I recently had surgery and so we had to change those plans and so I’m here in Raleigh on Capitol Square. Christ Church is here and we’re filming this message here just as a way of giving me a chance to say “Thank you” to all of you who sent cards and prayers in my recent surgery.  I’m doing well and I’m coming back to work.

But I did want to say something to you.  It occurs to me that this Jesus of Nazareth really does make a difference.  And God coming into the world in the person of Jesus matters profoundly for all of us regardless of our religious tradition.

In the park across from the United Nations, the Ralph Bunche Park, the words of the Prophet Isaiah are quoted,

They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks
Nation will not rise against nation
Neither shall they learn war any more

What’s not there is another part of that passage that’s in the second chapter of Isaiah, and it says,

Come, let us go to the mountain of God,
That he may show us His ways and teach us His paths

We who follow Jesus believe that the mountain came to us when God came among us in the person of Jesus to show us the way to live, to show us the way to love, to show us the way to transform this world from the nightmare it often is into the dream that God intends for us all.

So, as the words were spoken on that night when Jesus was born, peace, good will to all people, God bless you, God keep you.  A blessed Advent, a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year to all.

The Most Rev. Michael Curry
Presiding Bishop and Primate
The Episcopal Church

Eastern Orthodox Congregation invites Families to Russian Christmas Celebration

Saturday, December 19, at 10:00 AM, Christ the Savior Orthodox Mission Church will gather at St. Saviour’s Church in Bar Harbor to celebrate Christmas.  All are welcome; families and children are especially invited to participate in a Yolka, or traditional Russian Christmas pageant, complete with a visit from St. Nicholas, gifts, and treats.  All are also invited to coffee and a potluck meal following the service. Father John Pawelchak of Berlin, New Hampshire, leads Christ the Savior Mission in Bangor.  Since this spring, Father John and members of Christ the Savior have celebrated the Orthodox Divine Liturgy once a month in Bar Harbor as a gift to the Orthodox community here, as well as anyone who is interested in the Orthodox Church. Father John will be available for confession prior to the 10:00 Divine Liturgy.

St. John and St. Saviour:

Advent Book Study:  For the four Sundays of Advent, Tim and Kathleen invite you to a discussion of From Holidays to Holy Days: A Benedictine Walk through Advent by Albert Holz, OSB.  The author, a Benedictine monk who lives in the center of downtown Newark, New Jersey, invites the reader to join him on his daily walks as he points out dozens of often-unnoticed connections between our holidays and the spiritual meaning of Advent and Christmas.  Rather than criticizing trappings of the holiday season, this book looks at them from the viewpoint of Christian contemplation, once aptly described as “a long, loving look at the real.”

Quiet Time: While the world tells us that there are a million things to do, especially this time of year, the Church invites us to a time of reflection and anticipation during Advent.  In that spirit, Tim+ and Kathleen+ are committing to some quiet time each week during this season:  Monday mornings from 10-noon, and Thursday afternoons from 2:30-4:30.  We will still be in the office and are always available for emergencies, but during these times we would ask for your consideration.  In the same spirit, we also encourage you to think about ways you might set aside some quiet time for yourself during this Advent season.

Church of Our Father:

Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 8:30 am: Morning Prayer in the Rectory Library

Fridays: Contemplative Prayer Group ~ 12 noon ~ Pray together in silence and share resources and experiences from our prayer journeys. The hour will begin with gathering in silence, then the leader will share a resource or an insight about contemplative prayer, then there will be a time of silent prayer, and finally a short time to share our thoughts and experiences in group discussion. Everyone is invited to this group which meets in the Rectory Library.
