Worship Bulletin

Prelude: Suite in D minor, G.108-110  (G.F. Handel)

The Welcome

Hymn 495, "Hail, Thou once despised Jesus!"         Kimberly Haller, organ

Opening Sentence

Officiant     Jesus said: "If any of you would come after me, deny yourself and take up your cross and follow me."     -Mark 8:34

Confession of Sin (Enriching Our Worship)
Officiant    Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.
Officiant and People

God of all mercy,
we confess that we have sinned against you,
opposing your will in our lives.
We have denied your goodness in each other,
in ourselves, and in the world you have created.
We repent of the evil that enslaves us,
the evil we have done,
and the evil done on our behalf.
Forgive, restore, and strengthen us
through our Savior Jesus Christ,
that we may abide in your love and serve only your will. Amen.

The Officiant says
Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

The Invitatory

Lord, open our lips
And our mouth shall proclaim your praise.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Officiant The Lord is full of compassion and mercy:
People Come let us adore him.

The Venite:  Psalm 95

1

Come, let us sing to the LORD; *
    let us shout for joy to the Rock of our salvation.

2

Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving *
    and raise a loud shout to him with psalms.

3

For the LORD is a great God, *
    and a great King above all gods.

4

In his hand are the caverns of the earth, *
    and the heights of the hills are his also.

5

The sea is his, for he made it, *
    and his hands have molded the dry land.

6

Come, let us bow down, and bend the knee, *
    and kneel before the LORD our Maker.

7

For he is our God,
and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand. *
    Oh, that today you would hearken to his voice!

8

Harden not your hearts,
as your forebears did in the wilderness, *
    at Meribah, and on that day at Massah,
    when they tempted me.

9

They put me to the test, *
    though they had seen my works.

10

Forty years long I detested that generation and said, *
    "This people are wayward in their hearts;
    they do not know my ways."

11

So I swore in my wrath, *
    "They shall not enter into my rest."

Officiant    The Lord is full of compassion and mercy:

People       Come let us adore him.

Psalm 51:1-13 Read by: Scott Planting

1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your loving-kindness; *
in your great compassion blot out my offenses.

2 Wash me through and through from my wickedness *
and cleanse me from my sin.

3 For I know my transgressions, *
and my sin is ever before me.

4 Against you only have I sinned *
and done what is evil in your sight.

5 And so you are justified when you speak *
and upright in your judgment.

6 Indeed, I have been wicked from my birth, *
a sinner from my mother's womb.

7 For behold, you look for truth deep within me, *
and will make me understand wisdom secretly.

8 Purge me from my sin, and I shall be pure; *
wash me, and I shall be clean indeed.

9 Make me hear of joy and gladness, *
that the body you have broken may rejoice.

10 Hide your face from my sins *
and blot out all my iniquities.

11 Create in me a clean heart, O God, *
and renew a right spirit within me.

12 Cast me not away from your presence *
and take not your holy Spirit from me.

13 Give me the joy of your saving help again *
and sustain me with your bountiful Spirit.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,

as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever.  Amen.

The First Lesson: Jeremiah 31.31-34       Read by Sally Merchant

The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt—a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the Lord. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, "Know the Lord," for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the Lord; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more.

Canticle 10:  The Second Song of Isaiah      Isaiah 55:6-11

Seek the Lord while he wills to be found; *
    call upon him when he draws near.
Let the wicked forsake their ways *
    and the evil ones their thoughts;
And let them turn to the Lord, and he will have compassion, *
    and to our God, for he will richly pardon.
For my thoughts are not your thoughts, *
    nor your ways my ways, says the Lord.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth, *
    so are my ways higher than your ways,
    and my thoughts than your thoughts.

For as rain and snow fall from the heavens *
    and return not again, but water the earth,
Bringing forth life and giving growth, *
    seed for sowing and bread for eating,
So is my word that goes forth from my mouth; *
    it will not return to me empty;
But it will accomplish that which I have purposed, *
    and prosper in that for which I sent it.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *
    as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

The Second Lesson:  Hebrews 5.5-10       Read by Gail Leiser

Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the one who said to him,

"You are my Son,
today I have begotten you";

as he says also in another place,

"You are a priest forever,
according to the order of Melchizedek."

In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered; and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him, having been designated by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek.

Canticle 14:  A Song of Penitence    Kyrie Pantokrator
          Prayer of Manasseh 1-2, 4, 6-7, 11-15

O Lord and Ruler of the hosts of heaven, *
    God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,
    and of all their righteous offspring:
You made the heavens and the earth, *
    with all their vast array.

All things quake with fear at your presence; *
    they tremble because of your power.
But your merciful promise is beyond all measure; *
    it surpasses all that our minds can fathom.
O Lord, you are full of compassion, *
    long-suffering, and abounding in mercy.
You hold back your hand; *
    you do not punish as we deserve.

In your great goodness, Lord,
you have promised forgiveness to sinners, *
    that they may repent of their sin and be saved.
And now, O Lord, I bend the knee of my heart, *
    and make my appeal, sure of your gracious goodness.
I have sinned, O Lord, I have sinned, *
    and I know my wickedness only too well.

Therefore I make this prayer to you: *
    Forgive me, Lord, forgive me.
Do not let me perish in my sin, *
    nor condemn me to the depths of the earth.
For you, O Lord, are the God of those who repent, *
    and in me you will show forth your goodness.

Unworthy as I am, you will save me,
in accordance with your great mercy, *
    and I will praise you without ceasing all the days of my life.
For all the powers of heaven sing your praises, *
    and yours is the glory to ages of ages. Amen.

The Gospel: John 12.20-33 Read by Tracy Shaffer

Now among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks. They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, "Sir, we wish to see Jesus." Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. Jesus answered them, "The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honor.

"Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say—'Father, save me from this hour'? No, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour. Father, glorify your name." Then a voice came from heaven, "I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again." The crowd standing there heard it and said that it was thunder. Others said, "An angel has spoken to him." Jesus answered, "This voice has come for your sake, not for mine. Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself." He said this to indicate the kind of death he was to die.

The Sermon         The Rev. Stephen Muncie

The Apostles' Creed

I believe in God,

the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ,

God's only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried;

he descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again;

he ascended into heaven,

he is seated at the right hand of the Father,

and he will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting. Amen.

as we forgive those

who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,

and the power, and the glory,

for ever and ever. Amen.

The Collect of the Day

Almighty God, you alone can bring into order the unruly wills and affections of sinners: Grant your people grace to love what you command and desire what you promise; that, among the swift and varied changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.    (Book of Common Prayer, p. 219)

A Collect for Social Service

Heavenly Father, whose blessed Son came not to be served but to serve: Bless all who, following in his steps, give themselves to the service of others; that with wisdom, patience, and courage, they may minister in his Name to the suffering, the friendless, and the needy; for the love of him who laid down his life for us, your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.   (Book of Common Prayer, p. 260)

A Collect for the Fire of Love Within Us

Almighty and most merciful God, kindle within us the fire of love, that by its cleansing flame we may be purged of all our sins and made worthy to worship you in spirit and in truth; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.    (Book of Common Prayer, p. 111)

The Prayers of the People                       Read by Tracy Shaffer

God of Hope,

be with us in our struggles and fears,

and hear us as we pray for all who are in need,

as we respond "Save your people."

For the Church:

that we may trust in God alone

and proclaim new and abundant life to all;

God of mercy….  Save your people.

For people of other faiths; and all who seek the truth:

that together we may witness to God's loving-kindness;

God of mercy….  Save your people,

For Michael, our Presiding Bishop; Thomas, our bishop;

and for all who serve the Church,

especially our sisters and brothers in the parishes of Mount Desert Island:

that God will fill us with wisdom, humility, and love;

God of mercy….  Save your people.

For an end to war, violence, and terrorism throughout the world;

and for wise and just political leadership in every land:

that God will lead the human family to peace and goodwill;

God of mercy,….  Save your people.

For those who must fast every day;

for the hungry, the homeless, and the oppressed:

that they may know justice on earth;

God of mercy….  Save your people.

For all who face prejudice and discrimination:

that God will heal their wounds

and strengthen our commitment to respect the dignity of all people;

God of mercy….  Save your people.

For those the Church has injured or offended;

and for those we find it hardest to love:

that God will forgive our wrongs and resentments;

God of mercy….   Save your people.

For those who are sick; especially those suffering from the coronavirus;

for the safety of all health care workers;

and for all those waiting for a vaccine;

God of mercy….   Save your people.

I now invite you to offer your own prayers for those in any need or trouble……(silence)….

God of mercy….  Save your people.

For all who have died; and for all who weep and mourn;

God of mercy….   Save your people.

God of Compassion,

you know our faults and yet you promised to forgive.

Keep us in your presence and give us your wisdom.

Open our hearts to gladness,

call dry bones to dance,

and restore us to the joy of your salvation.  Amen.

The General Thanksgiving

Officiant and People

Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks for all your goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all whom you have made. We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up ourselves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all ages. Amen

A Prayer of St. Chrysostom

Officiant

Almighty God, you have given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication to you; and you have promised through your well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name you will be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, our desires and petitions as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the age to come life everlasting. Amen.

Officiant    Let us bless the Lord.

People      Thanks be to God.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all evermore. Amen.
