MDI Episcopal Church Events
St. Mary's and St. Jude's:
Contemplative Evening Prayer on Wednesdays in St. Mary's Chapel at 5:30 pm.
Church of Our Father:
Class on Paul and his writings in the New Testament. The class meets Wednesday evening at 6:45 pm in the parish hall. The format includes a 30-minute lecture heard on audio CD (from the Teaching Company series) by Luke Timothy Johnson, followed by a discussion. Weekly readings in the New Testament will be assigned. Sisters on a Journey, a monthly program for all women who want to share food, fellowship and prayer. Monday, October 25, the group will gather for a potluck meal at 5:30pm with the program beginning about 7pm. October's program will be a Psalm Reflection, Resting in God's Care. St. Saviour's Parish:
Concert - Sunday, November 7th at 3:00 pm St. Saviour's Parish Choir will present a special musical offering in remembrance of our loved ones who have died. The main work on the program, which will be accompanied by strings and organ, is Franz Joseph Haydn's "Little Organ Mass." The program will also include Mozart's masterpiece Ave Verum, Mendelssohn's serene Grant Unto Us Thy Peace, a gorgeous setting of the Shaker song Lay Me Low, and a stunning The Souls of the Righteous by Welsh composer Geraint Lewis. Everyone is welcome! Admission is free, with donations towards St. Saviour's Friends of Music gratefully received.
The Emerging Church continues Fridays at noon at St. Saviour's in the Parish Library. What is The Emerging Church? Sometimes called "Emergent" Church, this is a multi-faceted, ecumenical movement made up of Christians who question how far traditional church practices can respond to the needs of people in the 21st century and who are exploring new ways of following Christ today. Jenny Reece and Sarah Flynn will facilitate.
African Bible Study – held at St. John's on Thursdays at 2:30 p.m. Jonathan Appleyard, opens with a reading, a prayer, and a short period of silence. The first reading is read out loud slowly. Each participant recalls a word or phrase that catches their attention. The passage is read again and each participant shares how that passage touches their life, community, nation, or world. The hour long study continues using this format with the second reading and the gospel. The Bible study ends with a statement or two by each participant of what was shared within the group and a prayer. One unique part of this method is that it is not a discussion, but a way of listening to the Holy Spirit working through the Word and each participant's spirit. It is a great way to have a head start in understanding the Bible readings for Sunday's service. Jonathan will not be at St. John's on November 4th, but the group will meet on its own.
Clean Up Day at St. John's – Come on Saturday, October 30th at 8:30 a.m. with rakes, window washing materials, etc. We'll rake leaves, pick up sticks, clean and lower the storm windows, and put the garden to rest for the winter. Coffee, tea and snacks will be on hand.
New Christmas Cards Needed: Elder Reggie spreads hope and care within the prison where he works. We asked him if he had a wish list on ways for people to help him with his ministry and he said, "Yes!" He said he needs new Christmas cards to give to the inmates so they could send them to their families. Salvation Army used to give him cards but they can no longer do so. We told him we could do that. So the Christmas Card Project was launched. Our goal is to obtain 1,000 new cards to donate to the inmates. Thankfully, all of the Episcopal churches on the island are working together on this project. Please donate new cards and drop them off at the back of the church anytime. We will mail the cards to Elder Reggie the first of November. We need to have the cards by the end of October because it takes at least three weeks for the prison to process the package. Thank you for your help and donation!
Thanksgiving Baskets: We are collecting non-perishable, traditional Thanksgiving dinner fixings for the Bar Harbor Congregational Church who are creating baskets for clients of the Westside Food Pantry. Leave your donations in the back pew by November 18th.

Community Free Lunch – Quietside Helping Hands invites you to join us for lunch on Halloween Sunday (October 31st), 11:30-1:30 at chow Maine (next door to the post office) in Southwest Harbor. Bring your appetite for good food and good company. The conversation and meal are free. Any donations will go entirely to the Westside Food Pantry.
The Ministry of Spiritual Nurturing - November 5-7, 2010 - This rare weekend with Rosemary Dougherty offers practicing spiritual directors and guides an opportunity to explore 'who gives and who receives' in this vocation that is ours. Weekend includes time for silence, teaching, and spiritual conversation in community. Having served for 25 years as Director of the Spiritual Guidance Program at the Shalem Institute in Bethesda, Maryland, Rose Mary Dougherty is one of the formative voices in our time in contemporary spiritual direction. Belonging to the School Sisters of Notre Dame for her entire adult life, she was also recognized a few years ago as a sensei (teacher) in the White Plum Asanga lineage of Zen tradition. The St. John Singers meet the second and fourth Monday. Their November meetings will be November 8 and 22 at 5:30. All are welcome to join this group, which practices the hymns chosen to be sung on Sunday mornings.
Bar Harbor UCC - If you have a desire to study scripture more closely and learn some positive techniques for relaxation, meet at BH United Congregational Church, 29 Mt. Desert Street, for a guided meditation group which meets at 9:00 AM on Mondays; at 2:00 on Tuesday; and Wednesday evenings at 7:00 PM, in the downstairs library.

Gracious God, we offer thanks for our parish, for your inspiration, and for the spirit of ministry which is our heritage. We acknowledge your call to continue serving each other and the people in our community through open hearts and open doors. Guide us all, especially our Capital Campaign and Design & Construction Committees and Vestry, as we seek funding and plan expansion of the facilities, including accessibility for all at St. John. Inspire us to share faithfully the love that you have revealed to us through the ministry and sacrifice of your son, Jesus Christ. Amen.
