Please come to an IMPORTANT PARISH MEETING, this SUNDAY, JULY 27, at St. John’s after the 10:00 a.m. service.  Brett Donham, our consulting architect, will present several options for expansion/improvement of our facilities.  There will be plenty of time for questions, comments and conversation. Sandwich lunch afterwards.

Island Connections is badly in need of gas cards or donations earmarked to purchase them. Please send your check, payable to Island Connections, or cards you have purchased, directly to them at 15 Eagle Lake Road, Bar Harbor, Maine 04609.

No Frills Oil is offering all St. Andrew & St. John parishioners the opportunity to contract their oil price for next heating season at 8¢ off the going price the day you call them at 422-3581 to make pre-buy arrangements. You need to tell them you are a parishioner at St. Andrew & St. John’s to take advantage of this opportunity. They will also explain the other programs available to everyone.

The Return of Love Letters -- Chloe Hatcher and Phil Fox will delight us once again on Wednesday, July 30, 7 p.m., at St. John!  Bring your families, house guests, neighbors.  Tickets ($15.) are on sale in the church office—This will be a terrific fund raiser if we all spread the word!  Love Letters is a play by A. R. Gurney which centers on just two characters, Melissa Gardner (Chloe) and Andrew Makepiece Ladd III (Phil). Using the epistolary form sometimes found in novels, they sit side by side at tables and read the correspondence - in which they discuss their hopes and ambitions, dreams and disappointments, victories and defeats - that has passed between them throughout their separated lives. It is only at the sad ending that they realize they were really love letters all along.

Summer Food & Fun(d)raising: Peggy Engel (Thanks!) will chair a Soup & Sandwich luncheon on Saturday, August 16, in conjunction with the Island Arts Association Craft Fair on Pemetic Green.  Please call Peggy at 244-5114 if you can help her--make soup, setup, make sandwiches, etc. This will be another great time to welcome people to our church!

Public Meeting on Maine's "Supermax" Prison: Lance Tapley, who is a Bar Harbor native, will be giving a talk titled "Torture in Maine's and the Nation's Super Max Prisons" at St John’s Church on Friday, August 8th at 7:00pm.  The talk, which will be followed by time for questions and discussion, is free and open to the public. Currently a resident of Augusta, Lance Tapley is an award winning investigative and political journalist. George Swanson and Susan Buell have organized the presentation.

Pre-Emergency Heating Assistance Planning Meeting: Thursday, July 24, 10:00 a.m. at Ellsworth City Hall Council Chambers, sponsored by Washington Hancock Community Agency. In response to the rising cost of heating fuel and the increasing number of families who will need assistance this winter, many community groups and social service agencies will be inundated with calls for help. Churches, food pantries, homeless shelters, other non-profits, community groups, elected officials, and businesses need to discuss strategies to help people stay warm this coming winter. Agenda for the meeting will include: a review of the scope of the problem; identify resources available in Hancock County; come up with ideas to address the needs; how to network and collaborate to better help families; and plan for those in crisis situations. Your participation is greatly appreciated.

Celebration of the restoration of St. Mary’s by-the-Sea: August 14 at 6:00 p.m. – Concert of vocal and instrumental music, featuring guest musicians from MDI; August 17 at 10:00 a.m. – service; August 14-17 (11:00-4:00) – Festival of Flowers.
