Christmas Fair, Wreaths and Lunch: St. John’s will hold their Christmas Fair on Saturday, December 14 from 8:a.m. to 2:00 p.m. If you have questions please contact Edie Stanwood, 244-3429; Michele Daley, 244-3229; Bunny Watts, 244-3699; or Chloe Hatcher, 244-4436.

Please bring your items for sale (baked goods, crafts, gifts, etc.) to the church on Friday.

 

Christmas Brunch: On Christmas Day at 11:30 a.m. our parish will host an Island-wide Community Christmas Brunch. Come alone or bring family and friends. If you wish to help, please call Chloe at 244-4436. If you plan to attend, please leave a message with Michele or on the church answering machine at 244-3229.

 

Christmas Flowers/Wreaths: A sign-up sheet for donations to the Christmas flower/wreath fund is in the undercroft.  All contributions are gratefully accepted.  NO minimum!  Folks should list the names of people they want remembered or honored.  These names will be listed in the Christmas bulletins.

We have beautiful greeting cards made from a striking new photo of the church by Anne Wetzel, featuring the new red door.  Suitable for Christmas cards, or any occasion.  They are available for $2 each, 12 for $20, 20 for $30, with matching envelopes.  They are in Michele’s office.

St. Saviour’s

St. Saviour’s Parish at 41 Mt. Desert Street in Bar Harbor invites you to join us for a service of Lessons and Carols on Sunday December 15 at 4 pm and for an Advent Organ Recital at 12:15 pm Friday, December 20. The entire community is welcome at all events and we are handicap accessible.

 

.A service for “The Longest Night” will be held on Tuesday, December 17 at 6 pm in St. Saviour’s Chapel, 41 Mt. Desert Street in Bar Harbor.  If Christmas is a hard time for you, please consider joining the community at St. Saviour’s for a service of quiet prayer and remembrance, for sharing grief with one another and with the God who knows what it is to be human.  No one will be asked to share more than is comfortable.

Gloves & Soup needed: St. Saviour’s is collecting warm, waterproof men’s gloves for Rev. Debbie Little-Wyman’s the Common Cathedral Church, plus canned soup for the Bar Harbor Food Pantry (they are OUT!) which can be put under the Outreach Christmas Tree in the Narthex. As you shop for food for yourself, remember the folks for whom every day is a struggle.

 

Book Study -- The Education for Ministry group is inviting anyone who is interested to join them on Tuesdays, January 14 and 21 from 4:30 - 7:00 p.m. to discuss two supplemental texts: Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth by Reza Aslan; and And God Spoke: The Authority of the Bible for the Church Today by Christopher Bryan. Books can be obtained from the bookstore or library.  If there is sufficient interest, we may be able to order some copies for individuals or for sharing if you are willing to help pay for them.  Please let Sarah Flynn (sarahbf@myfairpoint.net) at St. Saviour's or Jayne Ashworth (jayne.ashworth@gmail.com) at St. Andrew & St. John know if you would like to pursue this approach to obtaining a copy of the books or if you have questions.

 

Church of Our Father

Christmas Concert, Sunday, December 15 at 2 pm.  Come, bring your family and friends to hear a delightful collection of Christmas favorites and a few new renditions by the Praise Band, Gospel Gents, Rachel and Dan Sieja, and more!  Cookies, milk, coffee and tea afterwards in the parish hall.  $3.00 suggested donation to help support youth ministries.

 

Holy Eucharist is celebrated on Wednesday mornings at 8:00 followed by a light breakfast.

 

St. Mary and St. Jude

We are thankful for our new Rector, Jane Cornman, who has accepted our call.

Jane comes to us from the parish of St. Mary’s, Wayne, PA, where she served as Associate Rector for eight years. There, she participated in all priestly duties, with a special focus on ministry to families and young adults. She earned her M.Div. at Yale Divinity School and her Anglican diploma from Berkley Divinity School at Yale. Prior to her calling as an Episcopal Priest, she served as Director of Operations for Messiah College’s urban satellite campus at Temple University, in North Philadelphia. In her spare time, Jane enjoys knitting, reading, cooking, and spending time with her family.

Jane and her husband Douglas have been married for 22 years. Their daughter Katie is a sophomore in high school, and their son Max is a freshman. The Cornman’s have been vacationing on MDI since 1990, and are thrilled to be permanently joining the island community. They will be accompanied by their golden retriever, Jack, and their cat, Zebra.

Island Connections seeks to provide free services to seniors, elderly and people with disabilities on Mount Desert Island and the surrounding islands that will enable them to live independently and with a strong quality of life. With sadness I share the news of the death of the Rev. Anne L. Hunter, M.D., 70, of Falmouth, on Sunday, December 8, at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough. After a long career as a physician - as a family physician in Rangeley and later specializing in hospice and end-of-life care in southern Maine -  Anne was ordained to the diaconate in 2006. She served as deacon at both St. Nicholas', Scarborough, and Good Shepherd, Rangeley. She is survived by a brother, two nieces, a nephew, and many friends and colleagues. A celebration of Anne's life will be held on Saturday, December 14, at 2 p.m. at the Cathedral Church of St. Luke in Portland, with the Rt. Rev. Chilton R. Knudsen preaching.

St. John:

A recital to benefit the Westside Food Pantry will be held at St. John's on Friday, December 6 at 7:00 p.m.  Eileen Brennan, recorder, and Stephen Sampson, piano, will play music by J.S. Bach, Robin Milford, Jean-Baptiste Loeillet, and others.

 

Advent Book Study Group: People of the Way:  Renewing Episcopal Identity by Dwight J. Zscheile (pronounced like “Shiley”) is an invitation to re-imagine what it means to be an Episcopalian in North America in the twenty-first century, in a post-Establishment, post-Colonial, post-Denominational, and nearly post-Christian world.  Father Tim is leading a discussion of the book during Advent on Mondays from 9 to 10:30AM following Morning Prayer in the Library at St. Saviour, and Tuesdays from 12:30 to 2PM in the Common Room at St. John’s. Anybody from any parish can attend either group, and it’s okay to bounce back and forth.

Thank you so much to everyone who helped make the St. John's  Community Thanksgiving a huge success! We provided 60 meals for guests from all over the island as well as Trenton, Hancock, Ellsworth and Lamoine. So many of you volunteered to set up, cook, serve and clean up that everything ran smoothly. We especially are thankful for the help and attendance from members of St Saviour's. With the generous monetary donations that we received, we will be able to provide more free meals throughout the winter months. With deep appreciation, The Martha's .

Community Events

Women of Faith Christmas Program: An evening of hope and joy for the entire family on Friday, December 6, 8-10 p.m. Southwest Harbor Congregational Church, 29 High Road, will show a simulcast of the program which is for all people of all ages and shows the reason why we celebrate. There will be refreshments and fellowship before the program at 7:00 p.m. For more information call 244-4300.

 

Acadia Choral Christmas Concert – A Celebration of International Carols, St. Saviour’s, Bar Harbor, 7 p.m. Saturday December 7 2013; 5 p.m. Sunday December 8, 2013.  Tickets are $15.00.

 

The Alcyon Center – First Weekend – 6,7 December 2013

From 9:00 AM – Noon join a small group of people taking 3 hours of uninterrupted silence.

At Noon a lunch of homemade soup and bread is served with fruit for dessert.

From 1:00 – 4:00 PM, 3 afternoon hours of silence complete the Quiet Day.

All are welcome to participate in the Quiet Day silence and luncheon meal.

If you would like to stay for Soul Friends, let us know and join us for a light supper.

There is no fee for the day.  Free will offerings are appreciated.

Women from near and far who have gathered for many times or who come for the first time

are warmly invited to come to The Alcyon Center from 7:00 – 9:00 PM.

There is no membership in Soul Friends; all women are welcome as Soul Friends for the evening.

Our evening consists of listening to each other speak from our lived experience

for the purpose of deepening our practice of the theme.

 In December the theme “Offering” will be considered.
