November 19 at 2 pm: "The Presence of the Past"
Baroque Lute & Guitar Concert to Benefit Episcopal Relief and Development

Freewill donations from this concert at St. John the Divine, Southwest Harbor will go to support Episcopal Relief and Development, both for Hurricane Ian Relief and the Gifts for Life holiday giving project of livestock and other essentials for community wellbeing around the globe.

Why The Presence of the Past? To emphasize how past musical traditions can resurface. In the neo-classicism of Prokovief; or Jonathan Dove's L'Altra Euridice, which uses baroque instruments almost exclusively in this retelling of an ancient story. (I played theorbo in the US premier of this work at Bay Chamber some years ago.) The 'presence' of these older traditions can take many forms: architectural (genres or other structural elements, as in the Passacaglia that concludes Britten's Nocturnal for solo guitar); thematic (the Nin-Culmell variations on this program); instrumentation (Dove's L'Altra Euridice); text (Dominick Argento's Six Elizabethan Songs); to name just a few factors in play.

Mr. Burris will begin with original lute works by Denis Gaultier and Silvius Leopold Weiss, as well as transcriptions for lute of works by gambists Marin Marais and Antoine Forqueray.

The second half of the program features works for solo guitar 'in the style of' music of the Renaissance and Baroque periods, by the composers Joachín Nin-Culmell and Gerald Garcia. Mr Garcia's "Tombeau sur la Mort de Monsieur H" honors the late American guitar master, John Holmquist. (Preceding Mr Garcia's piece is the work that inspired it, Louis Couperin's "Tombeau de Mr. Blancrocher" for harpsichord, in an arrangement by Michael Lorimer.)

November 19 at 4 pm: Evening Music Concert

Catherine Bull and Ann Sears return to St. Saviour's:
music for flute, piano, and soprano

Flutist Catherine Bull and pianist Ann Sears return to St. Saviour's for a second concert of music for flute, piano, and soprano, the third in the 2022-23 series of "Evening Music," on Saturday, November 19 at 4:00 pm. For this performance they will be joined by mezz-soprano Marcia Gronewold Sly, in a program centered on French music. The program will feature songs by Gabriel Fauré, and songs for voice and flute by Camille Saint-Saëns and Maurice Ravel. It will also include the rarely-heard "Sonatine" for flute and piano by Walter Gieseking, who although being German was world-renowned for his performances on the piano of French music and especially that of Debussy.

Catherine Bull is the flutist in the Baroque-ensemble Harmonie Universelle, and has played with Blue Hill Bach and with Music in the Great North Woods. Before coming to Downeast Maine, she was principal flutist for the Atlanta Baroque Orchestra and the Southern Crescent Symphony Orchestra in Atlanta. Ann Sears is Professor of Music at Wheaton College in Norton MA, and has performed often in Bar Harbor. Marcia Gronewold Sly is the founder and executive director of the Blue Hill Bach Festival; before coming to Maine she was active in the San Francisco Bay area, particularly as a performer with the American Bach Soloists and the San Francisco Opera.

The Evening Music series was inaugurated last year, to bring concerts of chamber-music to the year-round residents of MDI and the the Downeast region. The concerts take place one Saturday of each month (except December) at 4:00 pm in the sanctuary of St. Saviour's Episcopal Church in Bar Harbor, presented by the Friends of Music at St. Saviour's. The admission for all concerts in the series is free, but donations are requested from the listeners in support of the Friends of Music. It is required of all audience-members to wear a mask.

November 27: Shared Worship

Island-wide worship on the fourth Sunday of the month is on November 27, 2022

Supporting Partners Affected by Hurricane Ian

Web Statement

September 29, 2022

Episcopal Relief & Development is in close contact with Episcopal dioceses in the southern United States and Cuba in response to Hurricane Ian, which made landfall in Cuba on Tuesday and in southwest Florida on Wednesday.

In Cuba, the category 3 storm killed two people and knocked out power to the entire country.

"The Episcopal Church in Cuba has mobilized its local disaster committees who are assessing the damage, and potential responses, in their communities," said Kellie McDaniel, Senior Facilitator, Training & International Development, Episcopal Relief & Development. "We pray for the people of Cuba who are living through several recent disasters."

Hurricane Ian intensified to a category 4 storm before making landfall again on Wednesday near Port Charlotte, Florida with winds of 150 m.p.h. As of Thursday morning, more than two million people were without power and a storm surge of up to 12 feet caused severe flooding. The storm also caused flooding in the Florida Keys after heavy rain on Tuesday night. It is expected to reach Georgia and South Carolina by Friday.

Dioceses in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina have been preparing this week by checking in with communities in the storm's path, testing emergency communications systems and coordinating with area agencies.

"Our partners in the southern United States have deep roots in the community and are using their relationships to assess the needs caused by Hurricane Ian," said Lura Steele, Program Officer, US Disaster Program, Episcopal Relief & Development. "We stand ready to assist in the coming days and weeks."

Please pray for the people impacted by the storm. Donations to the Hurricane Relief Fund will support Episcopal Relief & Development and its partners as they respond.

For over 80 years, Episcopal Relief & Development has been working together with supporters and partners for lasting change around the world. Each year the organization facilitates healthier, more fulfilling lives for more than 3 million people struggling with hunger, poverty, disaster and disease. Inspired by Jesus' words in Matthew 25, Episcopal Relief & Development leverages the expertise and resources of Anglican and other partners to deliver measurable and sustainable change in three signature program areas: Women, Children and Climate.

Ways to Support Those Suffering from Violence in Ukraine

Continue to pray for Ukraine and those in danger.
Collect for Peace from the BCP:

Almighty God, kindle, we pray, in every heart the true love of peace, and guide with your wisdom those who take counsel for the nations of the earth, that in tranquillity your dominion may increase until the earth is filled with the knowledge of your love; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Members of the Partnership parishes gathered in the first week of the month to discuss Outreach projects for the spring. There was a strong desire to focus our energies on promoting organizations that are helping those living in the Ukraine. Two organizations that are being recommended are:

Episcopal Relief and Development
is working closely with Anglican agencies and ecumenical partners to meet the urgent humanitarian needs of Ukrainian refugees in Europe. People quickly packed up and fled Ukraine to safety and are now in need of basic supplies and will need long-term support. Your contribution to the Episcopal Relief & Development International Disaster Response Fund will help provide clothing, food, water and other items. For more information on this organization, including instructions on how to give, visit: www.episcopalrelief.org or call 1.855.312.4325

Save the Children: UKRAINE CRISIS RELIEF FUND Ukraine's children are in grave danger of physical harm, severe emotional distress and mass displacement. Save the Children is concerned for children caught in the middle of armed conflict, forced from their homes in freezing temperatures, and exposed to injury, hunger and cold. Your donation to Save the Children's Ukraine Crisis Relief Fund can help provide children and families with immediate aid, such as food, water, hygiene kits, psychosocial support and cash assistance. Together, we can protect children in crisis. For more information on this organization, including instructions on how to give, visit: https://www.savethechildren.org

St. John the Divine, Southwest Harbor will host a prayer service for the Ukraine the weekend of the MDI Marathon: Saturday, October 15 at 2 pm. Invite a friend to join in this service.

Once again thanks to all who have given in these times.  The Food Pantry appreciates our donations. There is a collection spot for non-perishable food items at Church of Our Father and St. Saviour's. Volunteers will transport them to the BHFP.
Thank you for your support!    Brad Berry

NEW MDI EPISCOPAL CHURCH MUSEUM!

The four Episcopal Churches of Mount Desert Island are working to establish a new historical museum located in a beautiful, secured setting at St. Saviour's Church. We have found that there are many, many items of church history hidden away in boxes, closets, etc. that are never seen and should be displayed for all to see. The museum is well underway and will open this summer. This is quite exciting!
We are looking for donations of  bookcases, a glass china cabinet, a larger desk, old church history items hidden in parishioners' homes. We will need volunteer docents for times we are open this summer.  Please contact Diane Zito, Sue Blaisdell, Joanne Sousa or Lauri Fernald (all listed in the directory) if you can help with any of these items.
Thank you so much!

You can also name your gift in memory or honor of someone through this site in the memo section. Congregation names begin with their town; chapels begin with "Chapel" followed by town and chapel name.
Click here to visit the online giving portal of the Diocese or click the button below.

As always, the church accepts other forms of donations (cash, check, etc.).
