St. Saviour's: Lessons & Carols for Twelfth Night, Sunday, January 6, at 4:00 pm. The choir will sing music by Peter Warlock, Felix Mendelssohn, and Hector Berlioz, along with traditional English songs from the 15th and 16th centuries, interspersed with readings about the feast of the Epiphany, which occurs on January 6. The Feast of the Epiphany is the twelfth day of the Christmas season (the same twelve days that are referred to in the popular Christmas song). Since the sixth century, the Christmas season has extended from December 25, the observance of the Nativity, through January 6, the twelfth day of Christmas, when the arrival of the Three Wise Men is celebrated. The name "Epiphany" comes from the Greek word which means "to be made known," and refers to the infant Jesus being made known to the world at large as personified by the Magi. The tradition has evolved that there were three of them (the Biblical record does tell how many they were), and that they came respectively from Asia, Africa, and Europe. Music that relates to this Festival generally refers to either the Three Wise Men, such as the well-known carols "We three Kings" and "The First Nowell," or to the star by which they were guided, as in Mendelssohn's "Behold a Star." All of these songs will be sung during the service. | | Community: COME TO THE MDI COFFEE HOUSE! Come for coffee, goodies, and conversation.
