At St. John's
Meditation on Tuesdays at 4:00 at St. John's. Please join us for 30 minutes of shared silence and "prayer of the heart," an ancient meditative practice of the Christian tradition. All are welcome! We meditate sitting on chairs, though if you prefer to sit on the floor, feel free to bring a mat or cushion. If you are new to meditation, have questions or concerns, or would like more information, please contact Mother Kathleen.
Backpacks, etc.: The Pemetic/Tremont School Backpack Program has restarted with 21 children this Fall. The Westside Food Pantry supports the purchase of nonperishable goods and some members of St. John's Church donate money to cover the cost of fresh fruits and vegetables each week. We are asking the four area Churches to help us with specific backpack items in order to defray some of the cost to the Pantry. St. John's is slated for boxes of soft granola type snack bars.
We also stock a box in the back pew with donated staples such as canned meat or fish, peanut butter, rice, beans, pasta, sauce, mac & cheese, cereals, soups, juice, fruit and veggies. You might keep this in mind as you shop. Every bit helps.
All items may be left in the undercroft when the office is open or brought to Church on Sundays.
Here's where and how YOU can help the Westside Food Pantry!
On Saturday and Sunday, October 21 & 22, 1 to 4 PM, a "note writing and envelope stuffing event" will be underway at St. John Church in the Undercroft. This is traditionally a very important part of our Annual Appeal and the stocking of the Pantry for the new distribution season. Please make yourself available for all or part of either of the two days to write one sentence notes on the Appeal letters, or stuff and stamp envelopes. We really would appreciate your help to get this mailing out and into the homes of our donors. Contact Henry Barendse, our event host and Pantry Committee member at hbarendse@mac.com and let him know that you will help out. You can make a big difference in getting us ready for the November Pantry opening.

Praying in Days Like These At our diocesan staff meeting on Tuesday, Canon Ambler noted that we seem to have entered an "era of disasters." We don't know what's happened overnight, but we're afraid to open the paper to find out - because we know it will be bad. Harvey, Irma, Maria, Mexico City, Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico, Las Vegas - disasters pile up so quickly that we can scarcely keep up, let alone respond. We're simply not prepared for disasters on this scale. In such a time, it's easy to become discouraged, even despairing. How do we respond to all these disasters? Our first impulse is to pray, and I want to affirm that impulse. Sometimes all we can do is lament our loss: pour out our hurt and grief, asking God for mercy. That's a good place to begin. Yet prayer is more than asking. Prayer is also listening: listening for God's response and for God's invitation. As we pray, God we may hear God inviting us to join in the work of reconciliation, to give of ourselves and our abundance. We may feel overwhelmed and frightened, but we are not helpless. God is with us, right here, right now. Let us turn to God in prayer. Bishop Steve | |
