Bishop Lane has challenged us to a Missional Experiment of “intentional seeing and praying in order to discern what God is doing around us and to discern if there is an invitation for us to join in.”

Teams of two people commit to meet together once a week for a year to walk the neighborhood and to pray. It will be up to the teams to define "neighborhood,” followed by the intentional discipline of walking and seeing with no purpose in mind but to attend to what's happening. After each walk is completed, the team sits down to note what they have seen and then to offer it in prayer. This effort is to be repeated each week. Periodically, there will be opportunities to meet with Tim+ and with other teams from our congregation and with other congregations in the diocese to share what has been seen and what you are learning.

So... this is first of all a ministry of seeing, then a ministry of prayer and discernment.  It's a ministry of patience, waiting on God.  And it's an effort to build new spiritual practices which put God and God's world at the center of our prayer life. Out of the seeing and the praying may grow new ministries - or not. But it's really a matter of changing our behavior - of seeing and praying for the sake of God's mission.

If you are interested, there will be a video conference on Tuesday, September 9 at St. John and Wednesday, September 10 at St. Saviour, both at 7:30 (you only need to attend one conference).  It is also possible to participate from your own broadband computer at home.  YOU MUST SIGN UP FOR THE VIDEO CONFERENCE AHEAD OF TIME!!!  Please give your name and e-mail address to Muffet or Michele by Thursday, September 4 if you wish to participate in the videoconference.

WEDNESDAY EXPLORERS

Wednesday Explorers is a weekly open discussion forum, facilitated by Vesta Kowalski, which meets in the St. John’s Common Room from 1:30 to 3:00 on Wednesday afternoons (note the new time beginning in September). There’s a different topic each week; the topics are chosen by the group. Anyone is free to come once, occasionally, or regularly, and friends from outside the church community are welcome, too. Schedule of topics for September:

September 3 – S/he said what? The third of our first-Wednesday open forums to discuss ideas from recent or past sermons that you found intriguing, irritating, inspiring, provocative, puzzling, peculiar . . . anything that made you want to talk back to the preacher.

September 10 – Has Jesus come back? While we wait for the Messiah to return (or to come, depending on our faith), is it possible that we sometimes miss God’s action in the world? What would it look like if Jesus were among us today? Are there individuals who might have been doing God’s work in a particular way?

September 17 – Mysticism. Many different religions, including Christianity, have mystical aspects and persons who are called mystics. We’ll try to learn a little about this particular way of relating to the divine, and perhaps identify aspects of the topic we’d like to discuss at another session.

September 24 – Just what are we doing on Sunday mornings? Liturgy is, in a sense, theater (as well as “the work of the people”). We’ll talk about our Episcopal liturgy step by step, discussing what it’s trying to accomplish – and what works and does not work for us as individuals.

Lay Eucharistic Visitors are licensed by the Bishop to carry Sunday Eucharist to church members who are unable to attend.  A training and licensing session for Lay Eucharistic Visitors will be held Saturday, September 13th, 9AM to 1PM at St. Patrick's, Brewer.  If you are interested, please check the Diocesan website (www.EpiscopalMaine.org) for details and registration.

Outreach—Child Sponsorship: Sharon Dayana Salazar has been our sponsored child for many years. She is now 14 and probably should be called a young teen. At the present only one person has signed up and paid for her sponsorship this season. The cost is $28/month and you can sign up for any month you wish. If you would like to participate, please sign the sheet on the bulletin board in the undercroft and write a check to St. John’s.

OFFICIAL NOTICE OF SPECIAL PARISH MEETING (AMENDED)

In accordance with Article V, Paragraph 4 of the Constitution and Bylaws of St. Andrew and St. John Episcopal Church (as adopted January 28, 2007), notice is hereby given of a Special Parish Meeting to be held Monday, August 25, 5:30 PM at St. John’s Church.

The subject matter of the meeting is two proposed changes to the Constitution and Bylaws.

Proposal #1:  Paragraph 8 of Article IV (Wardens, Vestry, Officers, and Delegates to Diocesan Convention) shall be amended as follows:

4.8 Following the annual meeting the rector and wardens (or the wardens if there is no rector) shall appoint for a three-year term as an associate member of the vestry a person who worships at St. Andrew and St. John, but who is in residence for less than half a year. A person so appointed shall only serve while in residence for less than a half-year. An associate member of the vestry may participate and vote in all meetings of the vestry, but is not entitled to vote unless a member of the parish. Upon completion of a full three-year term, an associate member of the vestry shall not be eligible for reappointment until after an interval of one year

The intent of the first proposed change is to extend voting rights to associate members of the vestry, with the larger aim of giving greater representation to seasonal worshippers.

Proposal #2:  The first two paragraphs of Article V (Parish Meetings) shall be amended as follows:

5.1 Right of voting shall extend to persons who are at least fifteen years of age and who have, during three of the previous three twelve months, been stated worshippers in this church and stated contributors to its support. Twenty members of the parish shall constitute a quorum at any meeting; and, a quorum being present, a majority shall control.

5.2 The annual meeting of the parish shall take place on the third Sunday in January or on such other date in January June as the wardens and vestry shall determine.

The intent of the second proposed change is to move the Annual Parish Meeting to June, with the hope that it will allow more of our seasonal worshippers to participate.  The change to the voting requirements is intended to make it clear that seasonal worshippers may vote if they have been faithful in the last year.

This change would not change the fiscal or budget year of the parish.  It is anticipated that the budget adopted by the Vestry would be presented at a Parish Meeting in January called for that purpose.

Any change to the constitution and Bylaws requires the vote of a majority of members present at two successive meetings of the parish.  This is the first proposal of these changes; if they are accepted at this meeting, they will be proposed again at the Annual Parish Meeting scheduled for January 18, 2015.  If accepted then, the Annual Meeting would be placed in recess until a Sunday in June, 2015, at which point elections would be held and other parish business would be conducted as usual.
