MDI+ Episcopal Church Events

 

St. John’s:  

Quietside Festival on Saturday, July 16^th

Basket Raffle and Silent Auction ~ please bring your items to the church office no later than TUESDAY.

Sign up sheets ~ are in the undercroft for working at or donating to the various booths.

Violin Concert, Tuesday, July 19 at 7:00 p.m. Violinist Amos Lawrence (son of Susannah Jones) and Stephen Sampson, accompanist, will present a concert of music for the violin at St. John’s as a benefit for the Westside Food Pantry. Suggested donation: $15.00.

 

Divine Luncheon – Sunday, July 24^th, 11:00-2:00, on the lawn. The luncheon benefits the Westside Food Pantry and features fresh herbs and edible flowers. Cookbook and inspirational author Katie Moose will be on hand with tastings from her books and to sell and autograph them as well. Helpers for setup, serving and/or cleanup should contact Mary Mitchell, Jean Rohrer or Dianne McMullan. 

St. John Singers – Meet the 2^nd and 4^th Monday from 5:00-6:00 to practice hymns for the upcoming services.

Farmer’s Market: Held in St. John’s parking lot each Friday during the summer from 9:00 to 1:00. Raffle tickets for Judy Taylor’s watercolor Bell House at Hockomock Head to benefit the Westside Food Pantry are on sale each Friday. (Drawing will be October 23^rd)

 

St. Saviour’s:

Meditation group for practicing together every Monday from 11:30 to 12:30 in the Parish Library; led by Sandy Haggett. This offering is for those who have some experience in meditation.

Church of Our Father:

The Prodigal God: Recovering the Heart of the Christian Faith (2008), by Tim Keller, on Wednesdays at 9:00 a.m. or 6:30 p.m. Led by Holly Craighead, summer intern.  The book is based on Jesus’ parable from Luke 15 that we know as “The Prodigal Son.”  In his book, Keller opens up the mysteries of God’s amazing grace at the heart of our faith, and exposes the errors of both moral relativism and religious moralism. 

Hulls Cove Virtuosi Recital: Wednesday, July 20 at 7 pm. Cellist Toshi Kono and Pianist Amber Liao will be playing a challenging sonata by César Franck. Flutist Deirdre MacArdle-Manning will play Schubert's Introduction and Variations on a beautiful song from his Die schöne Müllerin. Then they will play Beethoven's Trio No.4 in B flat major. A voluntary donation will be requested to defray the musicians’ expenses.

 

St. Mary’s and St. Jude’s:

Contemplative Prayer/Book Study – Wednesdays. Study of the Gospel of Thomas is held at St. Mary’s by-the-Sea, beginning at 4:45 p.m. Contemplative Evening Prayer (with 20 minutes of silence) begins at 5:30 pm. Led by The Rev. Patricia Rome Robertson. 

 

St. Andrew Lutheran Church (175 Downeast Highway in Ellsworth) will have a Supper on July 15, 5:30-7:00, which will benefit Maine Migrant Health Clinic.

 

St. Francis by the Sea in Blue Hill

For the next several weeks, Rev. Jenny is facilitating the Wednesday Scholars group at 10:30 a.m. in taking some time to share stories of their spiritual journeys. No one is obligated to participate but everyone is warmly invited to tell about their struggles and triumphs on the journey to connect with the Divine.

 

Southwest Harbor Congregational Church is hosting a Beth Moore led, DVD Bible Study for Women beginning July 12 and running for an additional three Tuesday evenings from 6:30-8:30. The study features four heart-to-heart messages designed to help women embrace the mandate to love and to develop skills for loving others. This fun study is open to all women. Come, bring a friend. Dessert, coffee and materials provided!

 

The Northeast Guild for Spiritual formation presents:

Divine Wisdom in the Biblical Mystical Traditions with Rabbi Rami Shapiro, Friday, July 22^nd, 9:00 am-3:00 pm, at St. Andrew by-the Lake, Seal Cove.

 

Dine-Around Day – all day on Friday, July 29: A fund raising event for Island Connections, one of MDI's most necessary, volunteer driven, non-profit organizations which endeavors to improve quality of life for senior citizens and people with disabilities.  MDI residents and visitors are encouraged to demonstrate their financial support for Island Connections by dining at participating restaurants on Dine-Around Day. How does it work?  Restaurant owners participate by contributing a portion of their Dine-Around Day receipts to Island Connections.  Some give a percentage of their receipts while others donate a flat amount.  Newspaper ads and posters will include a list of all participating restaurants.

 

Andrew Harvey, founder of The Institute for Social Activism, internationally known author, scholar, and spiritual teacher will present two evening programs on MDI:

Wednesday July 20, 6:00 p.m. at Cove End Cottage, 30 Neighborhood Road, Northeast Harbor (limited to 40 people, please call 244-3445 to reserve a place). An informal talk and conversation about the 13th century poet Rumi. A free-will donation for Andrew's work is appreciated.

Thursday July 21, 8:00 p.m., St. Saviour's Church, Andrew will speak on "Sacred Activism." Suggested donation is $15.

Andrew's books include: Son of Man: The Mystical Path To Christ; The Way of Passion: A Celebration of Rumi; The Hope: A Guide To Sacred Activism; and The Return of the Mother. He also co-authored The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying.

 

Partners in Peacemaking Festival: Sunday, July 31 from 11:30-1:00, the Somesville Church is planning a community building event, to partner with neighbors in peacemaking, and to celebrate the resources of the community. Along with informational tables and displays, there will be snacks, free snow cones, an easy art project for any who want to join in, and fun for all. You are also invited to attend their worship service at 10:30.

Gracious God, we offer thanks for our parish, for your inspiration, and for the spirit of ministry which is our heritage. We acknowledge your call to continue serving each other and the people in our community through open hearts and open doors. Guide us all, especially our Capital Campaign and Design & Construction Committees and Vestry, as we seek funding and plan expansion of the facilities, including accessibility for all at St. John. Inspire us to share faithfully the love that you have revealed to us through the ministry and sacrifice of your son, Jesus Christ. Amen.
