FORUM TOPIC—NOVEMBER 2 and 9

The Conversation or "the talk you've been avoiding with your loved ones."

Is your will up to date?  Do you know where it is?  Do your children know? Do you have a living will?  Does it include advance directives?  These are basic questions that most of us probably feel we have pretty well covered. But how about these:

If you were told you had a limited time to live how would your choose to spend that time? (travel...quiet mediation...tying up loose ends...or?)

What about the process of dying concerns you the most? (pain...being a burden...or...?)

How seriously have you thought about end of life care?

Have you shared these thoughts and wishes with family members?

On November 2 and 9 Nan Miller and Cookie Horner will guide us through discussions of these and related questions. Their skilled leadership will help us consider issues that most of us would prefer to avoid but which are very real for all of us.  There are huge benefits to both ourselves and our families if we do some serious preparation in advance of a crisis. Please plan to attend both sessions.  Come in time to get your coffee and settle down so that the Forum can start promptly at 9:00.  There is a lot to cover in just two 45 minute sessions.

WEDNESDAY EXPLORERS Wednesday Explorers is a weekly open discussion forum, facilitated by Vesta Kowalski, which meets in the St. John’s Common Room from 1:30 to 3:00 on Wednesday afternoons. There’s a different topic each week; the topics are suggested and chosen by the group. Anyone is free to come once, occasionally, or regularly, and friends from outside the church community are welcome, too. Schedule of topics for November follows (note that we will not meet on November 26, the day before Thanksgiving)

November 5 – How do we choose our charities? In a world full of needs – local, national, global – how do we make our individual decisions about where to invest the money that is one tangible way of loving our neighbors?

November 12 – “Church year is color coded.” This entry in Robin Williams’ list of top reasons to be an Episcopalian led to the suggestion that we discuss the church year, the reason for the colors, and perhaps the vestments and other trappings of Episcopal worship. Just what is it that keeps the altar guild so busy behind the scenes of our liturgical life?

November 19 – Is doubt a part of faith? Most of us have at some point in our lives taken a “vacation” from church, and often returned with a more mature faith. What do we doubt? How do we balance faith and doubt in our daily lives?

St. Saviour:

All Saints Evensong will be offered by St. Saviour’s Festival Choir on Sunday, November 2nd at 4:00 p.m. Music by Robert Powell, Craig Phillips and Geraint Lewis (all living composers working in the field of sacred music) will be featured. Please join us for this service of prayer and music and a reception of wine and cheese afterwards.

We discuss a different topic each week, chosen by the group. Anyone is welcome to come once, occasionally, or regularly; friends are welcome, too. Upcoming topic:

October 29(Why) did Jesus have to die? Early expectations of a Messiah included worldly triumphs, not an ignominious death. Theologians beginning with Paul and the writers of the gospels have tried to explain why what happened was so different from what was expected. We’ll look at different theologies of “atonement” and discuss whether any of them work for us today.

On Tuesday, November 4, Dean Henry asks you to vote YES for Article 6 in the Town of Southwest Harbor: “Authorizes the Selectmen to contribute $1000 from the Swap Shop reserve to the West Side Food Pantry.

Please pray for the Diocese of Maine meeting in our 195th Annual Convention Friday and Saturday October 24 & 25th in Presque Isle.  St. Andrew and St. John is represented by Rita Redfield, Gen Mackenzie, and Fr. Tim.  Besides the regular business of holding elections and adopting a budget, we will be considering a proposal to re-organize ourselves for smaller, less expensive and possibly less frequent conventions in the future, as well as a proposal to urge the Trustees of Diocesan Funds to divest stocks in major defense contractors and specific companies that profit from the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory.  Sadly, we will also be formally acknowledging the closure of three parishes:  St. Luke, Caribou; St. Ann, Mars Hill; and St. Stephen, Waterboro.  Please don’t hesitate to ask questions of your delegates before or after convention!

October 22What do we want from our priests? As the church is changing and the model of one priest for one congregation is becoming increasingly rare, it has been suggested that we should reexamine our expectations of clergy who work on some kind of “part time” basis. What do/can/should we expect from our clergy in the “emerging” church?

On Tuesday, November 4, Dean Henry asks you to vote YES for Article 6 in the Town of Southwest Harbor: “Authorizes the Selectmen to contribute $1000 from the Swap Shop reserve to the West Side Food Pantry.

Congregational Pastoral Care continues: We welcome any comments or suggestions from parishioners about this ministry. Please share them with Fr. Tim, Vesta Kowalski, Wardens or Vestry or Joan Bromage. And have a fresh look at our wonderful pew cards – do you know anyone who might need some friendly help?? We are blessed with parishioners who are always ready with generous help where it’s needed. Thank you all.

The Northeast Guild for Spiritual Formation is offering two programs with Rajmohan Gandhi, grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, on “Gandhi’s Practice of Love.” This is the practice that inspired the nonviolent movements of Martin Luther King, Jr. in the US, Desmond Tutu in South Africa and Thich Nhat Hanh in Vietnam, among others; yet, Gandhi said he learned the practice from his wife, Kasturbai, during the storms of their early marriage.

These two programs are a Day of Teaching (Friday, October 17, 9 am-3 pm) and a Retreat (Saturday, October 18, 9 am to Sunday, October 19, 12 pm). The cost of the Day is $75 (lunch included) and the Retreat $150 (Saturday lunch and supper included). Place: Pacific Hall in West Tremont.

The following link to the Guild web site offers more information and makes it possible for folks to register:

Dr. Gandhi is currently visiting Research Professor at the University of Illinois. He is also the author of perhaps the most complete biography of his grandfather, Gandhi: The Man, His People, and the Empire. He is a former member of the Indian Parliament and represented the Indian delegation at the UN Human Rights Commission in the 1990s.
