College of the Atlantic President Darron Collins

A Human Ecological Education at COA:

Adventurous Learning on Mount Desert Island

Darron Collins is the first president of COA to be born after the college was founded in 1969. Collins, who has a Ph.D. from Tulane University in New Orleans, came to COA from the World Wildlife Fund, where he served as the organization’s director of creative assets.

He has served as a World Wildlife Fund managing director in the Amur River region of northeast Asia and as a senior advisor to the environmental organization’s CEO, and has helped lead the group’s outreach efforts. While at WWF, Collins helped raise more than $10 million in grants and donations. Collins earned his Ph.D. studying ethnobotany in Guatemala, has researched the Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, and has worked on leopard conservation on the Russia-North Korean border. He also has taught at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta. As a COA student, Collins received a Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and a Watson Foundation Fellowship. As a Watson fellow, Collins studied the environmental and social impacts of hydroelectric dams in Latin America. Collins is an avid fly-fisherman, mountain biker, and trail marathon runner.

MDI Episcopal Church Events

 

ST. JOHN’S:

Westside Food Pantry Fundraiser: The Quietside Helping Hands, Pemetic students, the Westside Food Pantry and Chow Mein are holding a fundraiser for the Westside Food Pantry, January 30th at "Something's Cookin' On MDI" (next to the SWH post office).  There will be two seatings: 5:00 and 6:30--$15.00 per person.  Please call 669-2978 or email: info@somethingscookin-on-mdi.com to make reservations.  All proceeds will go to the Westside Food Pantry. We have been asked to help with the dinner.  They need willing workers for one hour shifts from 2:00-7:00.  If you are able to work please be in touch with Floy Ervin, fervin@roadrunner.com

 

ST. SAVIOUR’S:

Feast of the Presentation (Candlemas) Service will be held on Thursday, February 2, at 5:30 with the Rev. Johanna-Karen Johannson as celebrant. Donations of baby blankets will be welcome.

Community Valentine Pot Luck Dinner on Sunday, February 12 at 5:30pm in the Parish Hall. All donations will go to St. Saviour’s MDI Fire Fund which benefits fire victims on Mt. Desert Island. Bring your family, friends, neighbors and a dish to share (if you can) with friends old and new. Beverages will be provided. All are welcome – with or without a dish!

Natural Causes Killed Victor: a folk opera, written by George Swanson, will premier on May 4 and 5. The opera relates the suffering and death of Maine prisoner Victor Valdez to the passion and death of Christ. Checks for tax exempt donations may be made out to “St. Saviour’s Parish,” memo line “Opera,” and mailed to St. Saviour’s Parish, 41 Mt. Desert St., Bar Harbor, Maine 04609. ST. JOHN’S and ST. SAVIOUR’S:

Spiritual Practices for Lent and Beyond is the topic for Adult Study on Thursdays January 26 and February 2 at 9:30 am (at St. Savior’s) and 1:30 pm (at St. John’s.)  These sessions will focus on what spiritual practices participants are doing presently and possible ways to improve those practices.  Also, the group may explore other spiritual exercises such as meditation, prayer, fasting, service and sacred study.  Attendees are encouraged to bring pen and notebook.  These Thursday sessions will be facilitated by The Rev. Johanna-Karen Johannson, retired priest, formerly of the Diocese of New York.

 

ST. MARY’S AND ST. JUDE’S:

Community Bible Study at the Neighborhood House Living Room in Northeast Harbor on Thursday mornings at 11:00. The Rev. Linda Hatch (Union Church) and The Rev. Patricia Robertson (St. Mary & Jude) will present “First Person: a study from the perspective of the characters in the Bible.”

 

CHURCH OF OUR FATHER:

Building Global Vision.  A study, led by David Underwood, on determining "What does God want to accomplish in the world through our church?"  Thursdays, 6:30-8:00 pm.

 

Free Meals Available in our community:

Each Monday from 3-6 p.m. Everybody Eats provides a free meal in the parish hall of St. Dunstan’s Church, Ellsworth.

Each Thursday from noon-2:00 The Common Good Soup Kitchen provides a meal at 566 Seawall Road in Southwest Harbor.

Forum at 9:00 on January 15

Scott McFarland, Principal of the Mount Desert Elementary School, will speak on his experiences at the School, and on the state of primary education in general. Scott has been in education for the past 31 years, with 21 years spent at the MDI High School as a teacher and coach. Along the way he became the chair of the Science Department and later was tapped to go into administration and served the last three years as the Assistant Principal of the High School. For the past 10 years he has been the Principal of MDES.

He received a BS from St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish Nova Scotia in 1980 and later received a Masters in Educational Leadership from the University of Maine in 2002. He is a native of the island, having been raised in Bar Harbor and is 1974 graduate of MDIHS. He and his wife, Joy Lyons, and two adopted sons and a stepdaughter and stepson live in Somesville.

Given the person speaking and the topic, this would be a good opportunity to invite a friend or neighbor to join you for the Forum.
