EVENTS & NEWS

Sunday Services: During the summer, Holy Eucharist will be celebrated at 8:00 a.m. at St. Andrew by-the-Lake in Seal Cove and 10:00 a.m. at St. John the Divine in Southwest Harbor.

Lectionary readings for July 13th: Psalm 119:105-112; Genesis 25:19-34; Romans 8:1-11; Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23.

Weekday Morning Eucharist: Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m. at St. John’s in Southwest Harbor.

Vestry: Thursday, July 17th at 6:00 p.m.

Farmer’s Market: open each Friday from 9:00-1:00 in St. John’s parking lot.

Please come to an IMPORTANT PARISH MEETING, on SUNDAY, JULY 27 at St. John after the 10 a.m. service. Brett Donham, our consulting architect, will present several options for expansion/improvement of our facilities. There will be plenty of time for questions, comments and conversation. Sandwich lunch afterwards -- details to follow soon.

Island Connections is badly in need of gas cards or donations earmarked to purchase them. Please send your check, payable to Island Connections, or cards you have purchased, directly to them at 15 Eagle Lake Road, Bar Harbor, Maine 04609.

No Frills Oil is offering all St. Andrew & St. John parishioners the opportunity to contract their oil price for next heating season at 8¢ off the going price the day you call them at 422-3581 to make pre-buy arrangements. You need to tell them you are a parishioner at St. Andrew & St. John’s to take advantage of this opportunity. They will also explain the other programs available to everyone.

Church of Our Father is planning a Mission trip to do rebuilding in the Gulf area for Katrina relief during the first 3 weeks of November. The group will go to Camp Coast Care, a joint Episcopal-Lutheran endeavor just outside Gulfport, MS. Please call Brad Berry at 667-5087 or e-mail him at bayberry2@midmaine.com if you are interested or would like more information. You do not have to commit to the entire 3 weeks.

The Return of Love Letters -- Chloe Hatcher and Phil Fox will delight us once again on Wednesday, July 30, 7 p.m., at St. John! Bring your families, house guests, neighbors. Tickets ($15/person) will be on sale in church office, on Sundays, and at Quietside Fair.

Summer Food & Fun(d)raising: We are planning at least one event in August. -- Peggy Engel (Thanks!) will chair a Soup & Sandwich luncheon on Saturday, August 16, in conjunction with the Island Arts Association Craft Fair on Pemetic Green. Please call Peggy at 244-5114) if you can help her--make soup, setup, make sandwiches, etc.
The previous Saturday, August 9, the second of the Art Shows will be on the Green--who'd like to coordinate a luncheon on that day?? Give Joan a call, 244-3227.
These will be great times to welcome people to St. John's...!

Sabbatical stories: A Journey Out, A Journey In, Thursday evening, July 10th, 7:00 – 8:30 at The Parish Hall of St. Saviour’s Parish, 41 Mt. Desert Street, Bar Harbor. Jonathan and Ruth Appleyard will recount stories, slides, music and objects collected from their recent sabbatical that took them from Bar Harbor for four months to the islands of Kauai and Molokai, to lands of Italy and India, and finally to the coast of Rhode Island. They will invite participants to reflect on their own sense of place and belonging as pathways to appreciate one another’s experience. Refreshments will be served. Upcoming Memorial Services: Saturday, July 12th – 1:00 p.m. at St. Andrew-By-the Lake for Mary Lucas; 4:00 p.m. at St. John the Divine for Wally Klausky; and Sunday, July 13th – 2:00 p.m. at Fernald’s for Jack Wellington.

Quietside Festival: Saturday, July 19th. Sign up on the sheets in the undercroft to help at the various booths. Take your “treasures” to Priscilla Trafton’s so they can be priced. Bring your “baskets” and Silent Auction items to the church office this week if possible.

The next Universal Waste Collection day is Saturday July 12, 2008 from 9:00 am to 1:00pm at the Southwest Harbor Transfer Station, 47 Long Pond Road, Southwest Harbor. Computers, batteries, ballasts and mercury containing devices will be collected for a fee. Any residents that are interested should call EMR at 244-9033 for more detailed information.

Church office hours this week: Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8:30 to 2:30. Next week Michele will be on vacation, so please call the office (244-3229) before stopping by to make sure it is open.
