MDI Episcopal Church Events

 

St. Mary’s and St. Jude’s: Contemplative Prayer/Book StudyWednesdays, 4:30 pm to 5:45 pm, will return to St. Mary’s Chapel beginning Wednesday, May 11. Study will be held in St. Mary’s Chapel, beginning at 4:45 p.m. Contemplative Evening Prayer (with 20 minutes of silence) will begin at 5:30 pm. Those who gather will choose the topic or book for study. Led by The Rev. Patricia Rome Robertson.  

 

St. John’s:  

Quietside Festival An important organizational meeting for those in charge of the various booth’s will be held on Saturday, May 7th at 8:30 in the Undercroft.  

Lenten Alms Ingathering – We prayed. We fasted. This Lent our prayers and fasting became alms. Now with joy we celebrate God's immense generosity by raising Jesus Christ from the grave and making all things new!  It's Easter and Lent has done its work!  Let us gather our alms as a congregation--so that our prayers, fasting, and alms may benefit our Island neighbors-in-need.  Bring your alms to church this Easter season, and together with St. Saviour's we will designate their use to the ministries of the Westside and Bar Harbor Food Pantries. As God has been generous with you, be generous with your neighbors! Make checks payable to "St. Andrew & St. John Church." On the memo line: "Lenten Alms." Thank you. May God receive the glory and his people benefit!

Church of Our Father:

Prayer group meetings in support of Alpha, Mondays mornings 7:00 am, Parish Hall. The meetings will continue until the end of May.

Ultreya Plus, Saturday, May 14 at 5:30 pm. Gather at the church for an Ultreya-Plus and praise His name, He is always there! You can truly feel His presence!  What a gift this is, and if you have joined us before you know this wonderful feeling. Come and fill your heart to overflowing while we sing and nourish our souls as He engulfs us in His love. Evening Schedule: Praise and Worship, Witness speaker + participation, A chance to nourish your vital union with Christ, Holy Eucharist, Pot Luck Supper Grouping, Cursillo Grouping.

 

St. Saviour’s:

Friday Book Study Group, facilitated by Sarah Flynn and Jonathan Appleyard, will resume for 6 weeks in the Rectory Library, starting April 29th.

Meditation  group  for practicing together will continue every Monday from 11:30 to 12:30 in the Parish Library. All invited. A knowledge of "how to meditate" is required.  Led by Sandy Haggett.

 

 

COME HOME FOR SUPPER – Save the date! On Friday, June 3rd

MDI Musical Evenings – Friday, April 29 (7:00 - 9:00) hosted by Sydney Roberts Rockefeller.  The musical theme is Spirituals, and Rebecca Edgecomb(who played for St. John’s on Easter Sunday) will join the group. Behold the Beauty of the Lord, a series of workshops exploring the relationship between faith, worship, and the visual arts, presented by First Baptist Church of Bar Harbor.  The workshops will be, Saturday, April 30, and Saturday, May 14, both from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m.  The workshops are free and a light supper will be served.  Reservations are requested.  Registration cards are available in the BHCC church office or you may register online at www.fbcbarharbor.com.  F.M.I. call 288-3563.

 

Stories for All Ages, presented by Hope Lewis and Jude Lamb at the Jesup Memorial Library, on Friday, April 30, from 2:00-3:00.  Hope and Jude tell both original and tradition stories in a program designed for all ages.  Their stories include “How and Why” stories, local tales and stories from other cultures.  All are chosen to intrigue, entertain, and inspire.  For additional information contact the library at 288-4245 or library@jesup.lib.me.us.  This program is free and open to the public.

 

Harbor House fundraiser: Final Island Dining for the Spring will be May 5th at 6pm at Chow Maine Restaurant in Southwest Harbor. There will be a very special 8 course dinner. Reserve early with Dian Novella at 244-3713. cost is $50 per person, including tax and tip.

 

Island Connections – Volunteer drivers are needed to deliver meals and groceries, to drive neighbors to healthcare appointments, and to shopping and community centers. As MDI's population ages Island Connections is getting more requests than ever. Often it’s just a short drive to a healthcare appointment or grocery store and back.  Island Connections match neighbors' requests with drivers' availability and geographic preferences. Call Mary Parker at 288-4457 for more information.

MDI Episcopal Church Events

 

St. Mary’s and St. Jude’s:

Musical Evening, April 29, 7-9 pm, hosted by Sydney Roberts Rockefeller. The musical theme is “Spirituals”. We'll be joined by Rebecca Edgecomb - high school senior and award winner in the 2011 statewide jazz festival. Contact St. Mary’s for directions.

Contemplative Prayer/Book StudyWednesdays, 4:30 pm to 5:45 pm, at the Somesville Meeting House. In addition to prayer, we will learn about the contemplative perspective and life through reading interesting authors. Conversation begins at 4:30 pm and Contemplative Prayer (chanting, silence and prayer) at 5:15 pm. This study/prayer group is led by The Rev. Patricia Rome Robertson.

 

St. John’s:  

Holy Week Morning Prayer, 7:30-7:50 a.m., Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Easter Monday. Please join us.  In addition to reading the liturgy we sing one hymn.

Hospice Patient Care Volunteer Training begins April 20.  The 9 week training meets in Ellsworth on Wednesday from 3:30 to 7:00 pm, for 9 weeks. Total training time is approximately 30 hours. Volunteers provide regular visits and emotional support so caregivers can take a break, do errands, make special appointments, go out for a meal with friends or take a nap. Volunteers provide companionship visits for people who reside in nursing homes or have been admitted to local hospitals. They accompany families who need support during the dying process.  To provide this care, volunteers learn about communication and support techniques, family dynamics, simple bedside care giving strategies, local resources and team care. Registration form and an interview are required.  Please call 667-3531 for more information.

MDI Episcopal Church Events

 

St. Mary’s and St. Jude’s:

Lenten Teachings: Wednesday evening soup supper (6:00) and study, For the Life of the World: Congregations Turned Inside-Out.  This newly designed curriculum walks us through how to go from having a “church-shaped mission to a mission-shaped church”. Designed to help us explore how all that we do is part of the mission of God.  Bring your Bible. April 13: Where in the world? Preparing for a mission audit.

Contemplative Prayer/Book Study is led by The Rev. Patricia Robertson, 4:30 p.m. on Wednesdays the Somesville Meeting House, Parish Hall. We are currently reading The Wisdom Jesus” by Cynthia Bourgeault. This study/prayer group is open to anyone interested. 

For the Life of the World - Wednesday evenings in the parish hall, a study drawn from a curriculum on mission by the Rev. Christopher Duraisingh. Supper at 6 pm, with the discussion starting at 6:30.

 

St. John’s:

Service at Sonogee this Sunday, April 17th. Two things to note: (1) It's Palm Sunday; (2) The service is at 10:30a.m. Call Michael Shook (244-4425) or e-mail him at mshook@gmail.com  if you'd like to participate.

Westside Food Pantry: Open Sunday, April 17 from 12:00-1:00. Questions, call Susan Buell - 244-3124 or Dean Henry - 244-3539.

Easter Flowers: If you wish to remember or honor loved ones by making a contribution to the Easter flower fund at St John, please send a contribution to the church office or leave a check in the offering plate indicating "Easter flowers" in the memo.  On the forms provided at church, state who is being honored or remembered.  If you are sending a contribution from home, please include this information.  The names of those being remembered and honored will be listed in the church bulletin on Easter Sunday.

 

Church of Our Father:

Lenten Teachings: “Justice and the Poor,” a Lenten Study on the topic Justice and the Poor, led by The Rev. Mary-Carol Griffin in the parish hall, Thursdays at 1:15 p.m.

 

St. Saviour’s:

Lenten Study using Judy Cannato’s Radical AmazementFridays at 12 noon in the Rectory Library. Facilitated by Sarah Flynn and Jonathan Appleyard.

 

 

Outreach Easter Dinner Baskets. Christian congregations across MDI are joining with the Westside Food Pantry and Bar Harbor Food Pantry to provide Easter Dinner Baskets to our neighbors-in-need.  Shopping List: canned green vegetables, canned carrots, canned fruit, canned or boxed potatoes, stuffing mix, canned cranberry sauce, chicken broth, Jello, cake mix, cake frosting,  chocolate bunny. Fill a bag with items and bring to church by Sunday, April 17.

Godspell,  the lively Broadway musical based on the Gospel of St. Matthew, will be performed at the MDI High School Theater this weekend and feature Ezra Halkett and Rob Benson.  Performances are Friday and Saturday evenings (April 8 & 9) at 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday afternoons (April 9 & 10) at 2 p.m.

Pysanky: (Ukrainian Easter eggs, decorated using a wax-resist method.) Ellen  Gilmore will conduct a workshop on Saturday, April 9, from 9:30-12:00. Please call Ellen at 244-7338 if you are interested. The cost will be $15, with all proceeds going to the church.
