We discuss a different topic each week, chosen by the group. Anyone is welcome to come once, occasionally, or regularly; friends are welcome, too.

February 11 Discipline? Fasting, prayer, and almsgiving are the traditional “Lenten disciplines.” What do we mean by the word? Are these helpful practices in our lives today? Have we developed personal ways of observing Lent that are more meaningful or useful?

LET’S PREPARE FOR LENT

Pancake Supper · Mardi Gras · Shrove Tuesday

all rolled into one on February 17th at 6:00 p.m.

Once again the men (with subtle help from the Martha’s Guild and other women) will be putting on this annual event at St. John’s, sharing our space and kitchen with many from St. Saviour’s and our local community.  Festivities begin at 6:00 p.m. on the 17th.  The maple syrup is at hand, the pancake dispenser ready to go.  There will be no charge for the event, but donations to cover expenses gratefully received, any money in excess of expenses will be split between the Martha’s Guild and the Westside Food Pantry.  Signup sheets are in the

Undercroft or you may call the church office, 244-3229.

Lenten Discussion Series:  Bishop Steve has invited the whole Diocese to share one book this Lent:  Being Christian by Archbishop Rowan Williams.  Tim, Vesta, and Jenny will be leading Sunday discussions on the four topics of this book (Baptism, February 22; The Bible, March 1; Eucharist, March 8; and Prayer, March 15), and we will figure out together what we want to discuss on the last two Sundays of Lent (March 22 and 29).  We will be using Archbishop Williams’ short book as a resource, but feel free to participate whether or not you’ve read it.  The books are available in the church office for $10.
