St. Saviour:

Festival of Lessons and Carols: Sunday, December 13, at 4:00 PM, St. Saviour’s, will continue its long tradition of offering a Festival of Lessons and Carols in anticipation of Christmas. This traditional worship service for the season of Advent developed in England in the nineteenth century and has become a favorite in Anglican and Episcopal churches throughout the world.  It follows a simple format, with scripture readings telling of God’s love for humanity and the promise of the coming Messiah, each followed by carols sung by the congregation or anthems sung by the choir.

St. Saviour’s Festival Choir is made up of the parish’s regular choir with the addition of numerous additional singers from throughout the area, and will be directed by Andrea Horner, Interim Music Director of St. Saviour’s Church, and accompanied by Robin Ann Barron, Organist and Music Director of Bar Harbor Congregational Church.

The Rev. Tim Fleck, Rector of St. Saviour’s, says, “In a time when it is easy to be distracted by commercial glitter, this service is a reminder of the true meaning of Christmas, that God became a human being for the sake of humanity.  I hope that everyone will feel welcome to come and participate in this beautiful service.

Eastern Orthodox Congregation invites Families to Russian Christmas Celebration

Saturday, December 19, at 10:00 AM, Christ the Savior Orthodox Mission Church will gather at St. Saviour’s Church in Bar Harbor to celebrate Christmas.  All are welcome; families and children are especially invited to participate in a Yolka, or traditional Russian Christmas pageant, complete with a visit from St. Nicholas, gifts, and treats.  All are also invited to coffee and a potluck meal following the service. Father John Pawelchak of Berlin, New Hampshire, leads Christ the Savior Mission in Bangor.  Since this spring, Father John and members of Christ the Savior have celebrated the Orthodox Divine Liturgy once a month in Bar Harbor as a gift to the Orthodox community here, as well as anyone who is interested in the Orthodox Church. Father John will be available for confession prior to the 10:00 Divine Liturgy.

St. John and St. Saviour:

Advent Book Study:  For the four Sundays of Advent, Tim and Kathleen invite you to a discussion of From Holidays to Holy Days: A Benedictine Walk through Advent by Albert Holz, OSB.  The author, a Benedictine monk who lives in the center of downtown Newark, New Jersey, invites the reader to join him on his daily walks as he points out dozens of often-unnoticed connections between our holidays and the spiritual meaning of Advent and Christmas.  Rather than criticizing trappings of the holiday season, this book looks at them from the viewpoint of Christian contemplation, once aptly described as “a long, loving look at the real.”

Quiet Time: While the world tells us that there are a million things to do, especially this time of year, the Church invites us to a time of reflection and anticipation during Advent.  In that spirit, Tim+ and Kathleen+ are committing to some quiet time each week during this season:  Monday mornings from 10-noon, and Thursday afternoons from 2:30-4:30.  We will still be in the office and are always available for emergencies, but during these times we would ask for your consideration.  In the same spirit, we also encourage you to think about ways you might set aside some quiet time for yourself during this Advent season.

Church of Our Father:

Christmas Fair: Saturday, December 5, luncheon 9-1 pm, raffles, white elephant table, crafts, and baked foods.

Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 8:30 am: Morning Prayer in the Rectory Library

Fridays: Contemplative Prayer Group ~ 12 noon ~ Pray together in silence and share resources and experiences from our prayer journeys. The hour will begin with gathering in silence, then the leader will share a resource or an insight about contemplative prayer, then there will be a time of silent prayer, and finally a short time to share our thoughts and experiences in group discussion. Everyone is invited to this group which meets in the Rectory Library.

St. Mary & St. Jude:

Prayer Shawl Ministry: Thursdays at 10:00 a.m.

Angel Tree: The Parish will be pairing with local organizations and our local elementary school to identify those in need.  Our goal is to alleviate some of the stress of the Christmas season by continuing to support their needs through our Angel Tree program. For those of you who aren’t familiar with our program, we reach out to our parishioners each year asking for donations. With these donations we purchase clothing, outerwear, sneakers and boots for children of the identified families.  We also have a tree in the back of our church with tags representing other types of gifts the children are hoping to find under their Christmas tree.   Individuals can pick up these tags in the weeks prior to Christmas so they can buy the gifts listed on the tag for an individual child.  Once purchased, you would return the gift to the church and leave them under the tree where they will be picked up, wrapped and delivered to the individual families.  We are happy for people to participate in whichever way they wish.

Community:

Annual  Living Nativity - The Bar Harbor  UCC  will offer their 42nd annual gift  of the Annual Living Nativity on the evening of Friday, December 4th at 6:00 to 7:30pm.  This biblical scene will take place on the church steps, and will coordinate with the Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce’s “Midnight Madness”.  Take this time to ponder the true meaning of Christmas!

COFFEE’S ON! The Maine Sea Coast Mission cordially invites all MDI Senior Citizens to join them for Coffee, Conversation and Music every first and third Tuesday of the months during the winter.
