The sign welcoming all to St. Andrew by the Lake has finally been erected in close proximity to the Tremont School. For years it hung in front of the church, but was replaced six or seven years ago by the predecessor to today’s sign. Languished in the undercroft, it was finally cleaned up and mounted to a new post joining the sign welcoming all to St. John on Rt. 102 in SWH
“Feed my flock”
Two weeks ago I had the great, but humbling, privilege to join with our friends (including Pamela Smith and Carmen Greene from St. Saviour) at St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Ellsworth to help package nutritionally balanced meals for hungry children. These consist of a Traditional Rice Casserole, Bean and Rice Meal and Macaroni and Cheese Dinner. The event was organized by the church and Outreach Inc. (a Charity Navigator Four Star charity) for their “Kids Care” program.
I was part of a group of about sixty grownups and kids providing the labor. Prior to the event St. Andrew had held several fundraisers to provide the money for the food, essentially 25 cents/meal. Last year they packed 13,000 meals, this year it was 40,000 – mind boggling! As we packed, fundraising continued. Originally scheduled from 9-2, they kept packing until 4, the next day people came in prior to church, packed more and they finally quit on Monday when the money ran out.
Where does the food go? To where it is needed, but more specifically to places like the West Side Food Pantry’s “Backpack” program. In our case, four cartons which works out to provide almost a thousand meals going to local children and their families. I look forward to doing this again next fall and I would encourage you to join in with your labor and the funds to purchase the bulk food. Celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Westside Food Pantry
on Sunday, October 25 at St. John’s in Southwest Harbor!
Dean Henry will be speaking at both services, with a festive coffee hour fellowship following the 10:00 am service. Proceeds from non-pledged donations on this day will be contributed to the Westside Food Pantry. Please join us in marking the cooperative sharing of the Westside communities and St. Andrew and St. John Episcopal Church!

Live Country music featuring Nashville singer-songwriter Danika Portz! Friday, October 2, 7:30 pm. Described as a mixture of Mumford and Sons, Kacey Musgraves, and Katy Perry -- with a voice on par with Norah Jones -- Danika is lyrically grounded in country music, yet unafraid to think outside the box melodically. Recently returned from a tour of SW Asia with Armed Forces Entertainment, Danika performs in Nashville at the Bluebird Café as well as the historic Hotel Indigo, Douglas Corner, and Antique Archaeology (History Channel's American Picker's antique shop). She plays energy packed pop-country shows at festivals and fairs across the county. Danika is offering a special benefit concert in one of the best music venues in Maine -- St. Saviour's Episcopal Church. Suggested donation $12 (students $6). Tickets available at the door or in advance at St. Saviour's or Galyn's Restaurant (17 Main St, Bar Harbor). All proceeds will benefit the mission and ministry of St. Saviour's.

Coffee’s On Planning Meeting: One of the highlights of last winter was the warm and pleasant time we spent with Island seniors aged 60 to 90 at “Coffee’s On” every first and third Tuesday of the month at the Maine Sea Coast Mission. The Mission is happy to be able to offer this program once again from this upcoming November through April 2016. And I am pleased to report that Ruth Grierson will again be providing our toe-tapping background music. You are invited to a breakfast meeting at the Mission, 127 West St., Bar Harbor, on October 20th at 9 AM to plan for the upcoming season. Normal Aging and Dementia: What Matters Most
Birch Bay Village is offering a course titled “Normal Aging and Dementia: What Matters Most” beginning Wednesday, October 7 from 6:30 to 8:30pm at MDI High School. Everyone has a lot of questions about what is normal as we age. These questions become even more complicated if we are already coping with health concerns or chronic conditions like dementia. What is normal? There is no simple answer. We are bombarded with ads and information on TV and print media telling us everything that could be wrong and what treatment might help us. But little time is spent telling people what to expect and how to identify when something is or is not “normal” or even if the not normal is something to be worried about. Course instructor Peter Sullivan, RN, MBA says “Sometimes, people are afraid something may be wrong and are simply afraid to say anything or ask anyone. Sometimes there is a real health issue while other times it is normal aging. Our goal is to empower adults to feel confident asking questions about their own health”. The topics covered will be: normal vs. abnormal aging, what is dementia, care strategies, and music therapy and dementia. Seniors, caregivers, and anyone with an interest in the aging process will find this educational series helpful. The cost is $10 for all four sessions. For more information or to register contact Mt. The Window Dressers’ Project fabricates thousands of window inserts in communities across Maine to help weatherize homes, keep vulnerable residents warmer, reduces greenhouse gases and lower fossil fuel costs. The MDI Community Build will be October 12-16 at Bar Harbor Congregational Church. Volunteers will gather to assemble and finish window inserts fabricated by Window Dressers in Rockland. Singing for Those at the End of Life: Saturday, October 24, 8:30-4:00 at Maple Hill Farm, Hallowell. Kathy Leo, founding member of the Hallowell Singers, will be the keynote speaker. Bereavement Support Volunteer Training, Wednesdays, October 7 - November 18, 3:30 - 7:00 p.m., Hospice Volunteers of Hancock County, 14 McKenzie, Ellsworth. HVHC Bereavement Support Volunteers provide support to grieving individuals and groups. This training prepares participants to facilitate support groups and provide one-on-one support to grieving individuals. Training topics include: Introduction to Hospice Philosophy; Understanding Grief; Enhancing Listening Skills and Communicating with Compassion; Spirituality and the Grieving Process; Group Facilitation; Effects of Grief on Children and Families; Boundaries and Self-Care. At Home Mount Desert Island, a program of Washington Hancock Community Agency, is a member-based, volunteer supported program designed to provide older residents of Mount Desert Island with core services, empowering them to continue to live independently in their homes for as long as they are able.
