EVENTS & NEWS

 Sunday Services: During the summer, Holy Eucharist will be celebrated at 8:00 a.m. at St. Andrew by-the-Lake in Seal Cove and 10:00 a.m. at St. John the Divine in Southwest Harbor. September 7^th will be the last service this year at St. Andrew.

 

Lectionary readings for August 31^st: Psalm 105:1-6, 23-26, 45c; Exodus 3:1-15; Romans 12:9-21; Matthew 16:21-28.

 

Weekday Morning Eucharist: Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m. at St. John’s in Southwest Harbor.

 

Rally Sunday: September 14, after both services – in the Undercroft. Learn and ask about parish ministries! Sign up to help out!

Goodbye Chilton, Hello Steve: Saturday, September 6^th at the Holiday Inn in Waterville, 1:30-4:30 – light buffet/open house and program; 5:00 p.m. – Eucharist at St. Mark’s. Friday, September 12, 7:00 p.m. – farewell banquet at Park Hotel in Portland. Reservations (buffet and banquet) should be sent to amy@episcopalmaine.org or (207) 882-7184.

Farmer’s Market: open each Friday from 9:00-1:00 in St. John’s parking lot.

 

End of Summer Picnic: Bill Weir and the Bar Harbor Savings & Loan are sponsoring the Island Connections End of Summer Picnic. Chef Bill will be providing all the great food that makes a cookout a success.  All seniors and disabled on the Island are welcome to this FREE picnic. It will be held at Grant Park in Albert Meadows on Thursday, September 11^th (rain date Friday, September 12^th) at 12 pm. Entertainment is not finalized at this time, but will be announced soon. Transportation will be available from Malvern Belmont in Bar Harbor or Ridge Apartments in Southwest Harbor. Please RSVP by September 8^th by calling Island Connections at 288-4457. (PS there will be two ships in port to make the view spectacular).

 

Common Ground Fair: Let’s all go to the MOFGA Common Ground Country Fair in Unity, ME on Friday, September 19^th. This is a rain or shine fun day.  Island Connections invites all Island seniors who enjoy a day of fun and walking, eating & shopping to join us. The price for the bus trip and ticket to the fair is $10. We will be departing Malvern Belmont at 8 am, picking up at Somesville Fire Station at 8:25 am and returning home around 4 pm. This is a large Cyr Bus with a restroom. Please RSVP by Monday, September 15^th 288-4457

 Sunday Services: During the summer, Holy Eucharist will be celebrated at 8:00 a.m. at St. Andrew by-the-Lake in Seal Cove and 10:00 a.m. at St. John the Divine in Southwest Harbor.

 

Lectionary readings for August 17^h: Psalm 124; Exodus 1:8-2:10; Romans 12:1-8; Matthew 16:13-20.

 

Bishop Lane to visit: Please join us as we welcome our new Bishop, the Right Rev. Stephen Lane, to our parish this Sunday, August 24^th.  He will preach and preside at St. Andrew at 8:00 a.m. and at St. John at 10:00.  At the 10:00 service, Jim Vekasi will be confirmed and Johanna Xochitil will be received in the Episcopal Church.  After that service, the Bishop looks forward to visiting with parishioners; then he will join Vestry members for lunch (at the church) and a meeting. On Saturday evening, he will meet with members of ARC (Acadia Regional Coalition) at St. Dunstan’s in Ellsworth.

Taize Service: Sunday, August 24^th, 5:00 p.m. at St. Andrew’s. This is a service of silence and candles, and short, chant-like songs repeated several times. Vesta Kowalski, playing her flute, and Bob Winglass, on his guitar, will offer the music. If you’ve never experienced this beautiful, simple service, now is a great opportunity to do so. It is an ecumenical service with folks from different traditions worshipping together quietly, and our small Seal Cove church is the perfect place for it! Mount Desert Island Organ Festival

• Wednesday evening, August 20^th, at 7:00, Kevin Birch, Director of Music at St. John's Catholic Church in Bangor, will present an illustrated lecture on "Hook Organs in the State of Maine", followed by a short recital playing works of Bach, Rinck, Foote & Buck on Greta, the 1885 Hook & Hasting Tracker organ at St. John.
• Thursday evening, August 21^st, again at 7:00, Douglas Beck, Organist-Choirmaster, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Old Town, Alexandria, VA, returns to St. John Episcopal Church for a full recital with works of Langlais, Bach, Mendelssohn, Martinson, Rorem, Bèdard & Yon. 
• Friday, August 22^nd, 12:15-1:00, the festival will conclude at St. Saviour's Parish, in Bar Harbor, with Music Director Julia Morris-Myers performing on their Visser-Rowland organ.  This will be the fourth and concluding recital of St. Saviour’s Friday noon recital series.

We have received several donations to help cover expenses.  All donations above expenses will help maintain “Greta”.  There are no admission charges, we welcome donations ($10 suggested).

Capital Campaign Committee Meeting:  Tuesday, August 26, 5-6:30 p.m.
