Worship at Home: Pentecost 13   When life's circumstances prevent us from attending Church.   The Greeting   Grace to you and peace from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.    -Philippians 1:2   Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. Silence may be kept.   Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.   Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen.   Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness: Come let us adore him.   Jubilate      Psalm 100   Be joyful in the Lord, all you lands; *     serve the Lord with gladness     and come before his presence with a song. For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; *     and his faithfulness endures from age to age.   The Lessons   The First Lesson   Deuteronomy 30:15-20 Moses said to all Israel the words which the Lord commanded him, "See, I have set before you today life and prosperity, death and adversity. If you obey the commandments of the Lord your God that I am commanding you today, by loving the Lord your God, walking in his ways, and observing his commandments, decrees, and ordinances, then you shall live and become numerous, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land that you are entering to possess. But if your heart turns away and you do not hear, but are led astray to bow down to other gods and serve them, I declare to you today that you shall perish; you shall not live long in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess. I call heaven and earth to witness against you today that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Choose life so that you and your descendants may live, loving the Lord your God, obeying him, and holding fast to him; for that means life to you and length of days, so that you may live in the land that the Lord swore to give to your ancestors, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob."   The Response   Psalm 1 Beatus vir qui non abiit   1 Happy are they who have not walked in the counsel of the wicked, * nor lingered in the way of sinners, nor sat in the seats of the scornful! 2 Their delight is in the law of the Lord, * and they meditate on his law day and night. 3 They are like trees planted by streams of water, bearing fruit in due season, with leaves that do not wither; * everything they do shall prosper. 4 It is not so with the wicked; * they are like chaff which the wind blows away. 5 Therefore the wicked shall not stand upright when judgment comes, * nor the sinner in the council of the righteous. 6 For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, * but the way of the wicked is doomed.   The Second Lesson   Philemon 1-21 Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus, and Timothy our brother, To Philemon our dear friend and co-worker, to Apphia our sister, to Archippus our fellow soldier, and to the church in your house: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. When I remember you in my prayers, I always thank my God because I hear of your love for all the saints and your faith toward the Lord Jesus. I pray that the sharing of your faith may become effective when you perceive all the good that we may do for Christ. I have indeed received much joy and encouragement from your love, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you, my brother. For this reason, though I am bold enough in Christ to command you to do your duty, yet I would rather appeal to you on the basis of love-- and I, Paul, do this as an old man, and now also as a prisoner of Christ Jesus. I am appealing to you for my child, Onesimus, whose father I have become during my imprisonment. Formerly he was useless to you, but now he is indeed useful both to you and to me. I am sending him, that is, my own heart, back to you. I wanted to keep him with me, so that he might be of service to me in your place during my imprisonment for the gospel; but I preferred to do nothing without your consent, in order that your good deed might be voluntary and not something forced. Perhaps this is the reason he was separated from you for a while, so that you might have him back forever, no longer as a slave but more than a slave, a beloved brother-- especially to me but how much more to you, both in the flesh and in the Lord. So if you consider me your partner, welcome him as you would welcome me. If he has wronged you in any way, or owes you anything, charge that to my account. I, Paul, am writing this with my own hand: I will repay it. I say nothing about your owing me even your own self. Yes, brother, let me have this benefit from you in the Lord! Refresh my heart in Christ. Confident of your obedience, I am writing to you, knowing that you will do even more than I say.     The Gospel Lesson   Luke 14:25-33 Now large crowds were traveling with Jesus; and he turned and said to them, "Whoever comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and even life itself, cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not carry the cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not first sit down and estimate the cost, to see whether he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it will begin to ridicule him, saying, `This fellow began to build and was not able to finish.' Or what king, going out to wage war against another king, will not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to oppose the one who comes against him with twenty thousand? If he cannot, then, while the other is still far away, he sends a delegation and asks for the terms of peace. On the first Wednesday of the month, we will use a Rite I liturgy. Covid Precautions: If you are exhibiting any of the symptoms of Covid, please choose to attend a service online.  Our Covid protocols will be followed:   Vaccinations expected, unless medically prohibited Everyone masked indoors Socially distanced seating is available, not required Outdoor coffee hour, weather permitting Sanitize your hands prior to receiving Communion.  The Bread and Wine are both offered at Communion.  Receiving the Bread only is a full communion. If individuals wish to receive the Wine, they should sip lightly from the Cup from the Chalice Bearer. For safety reasons, Intinction - dipping the Bread into the Wine - is not an option.  God bless you for keeping our church, our community,  and our loved ones safe.   If you or a close contact tests positive for Covid, please let Mother Holly know so we can support you in your recovery and communicate with the community as necessary about their possible exposure to the virus while maintaining confidentiality and pastoral privacy. Assisting at Services While you are on MDI for the summer, perhaps you would enjoy serving on Sundays! Pastoral Care Requests Holy Communion: If you are unable to attend an in-person worship service and would like Holy Communion brought to you, please contact the church office (contact information is at the bottom of this email). We will arrange a time for the clergy, our Pastoral Care Associate Maribeth Payne, or a Eucharistic Visitors to bring the Sacrament to your home or hospital bedside. Hospital Visits: If you or a loved one is in the hospital, please let Mother Holly know. She is glad to come visit you in the hospital or call you during your stay.  News Season of Creation begins today Yes, it's time for caring for creation to be the focus of our worship in the Diocese of Maine! "The heavens are telling the glory of God; and the firmament proclaims God's handiwork. Day to day pours forth speech, and night to night declares knowledge their voice is not heard; yet their voice goes out through all the Earth, and their words to the end of the world." (Ps. 19:1-4) The Season of Creation is a time to renew our relationship with our Creator and all creation through celebration, conversion, and commitment together. During the Season of Creation, the Episcopal Diocese of Maine joins our siblings in the ecumenical Christian family in prayer and action for our common home.The season starts today with the World Day of Prayer for Creation, and it ends on 4 October with the Feast of St.Francis of Assisi.  The Climate Justice Council shared this letter last week welcoming us to prepare for the Season and pointing us toward liturgical resources.  Find these and more on the Creation Care page of our website.  Stay up to date with 2022 Diocesan Convention news   The 203rd Convention of the Diocese of Maine will convene online on Saturday, October 22. Clergy and delegates who are voting will meet via Zoom. The meeting will be livestreamed on YouTube for everyone to watch! Swords to Plowshares demonstration coming to Maine   Grace Episcopal Church in Bath (1100 Washington St) will be hosting "Swords to Plowshares: Transforming Guns into Garden Tools" on Saturday, September 24 from 1-3 pm. This demonstration from Bishop Jim Curry of Swords to Plowshares Northeast will feature hands-on participation at forge and anvil, creating gardening tools and jewelry from guns that have been previously surrendered. Download an event flier here.   Upcoming Events and Dates September 7: Outreach Meeting, 9 am  The Outreach, Evangelism, and Mission committee meets every first Wednesday at Church of Our Father after 8 am worship. Please join us Wednesday, September 7!  We will discuss initiatives for the fall and winter, such as the Thanksgiving baskets and holiday gift cards we've participated in for many years. We will discuss the invitation we received from St. Andrew's Lutheran, Ellsworth to co-sponsor the "adoption" of a Ukrainian family who is relocating to the greater Ellsworth area.   Now - September 13: SASJ Office Is Closed  Michele, our parish administrator, is out of the office for vacation. Please call or email the office if you have a need during this time. We will be checking for messages daily. Thank you!  September 14: Eucharistic Minister Training after 8 am Worship If you would like to serve as a Eucharistic Minister / Chalice Bearer, please contact Mother Holly and attend this training following worship after the Wednesday 8 am service at Church of Our Father on Wednesday, Sept. 14. There will be another training offered on a Sunday, but please attend this training, if possible, so you can be licensed to start serving earlier.  September 18: Stained Glass Talk  at St. John the Divine after 5 pm worship. September 21: Heyward discusses new book with Maine  The Maine Council of Churches and The BTS Center have invited world-renowned theologian and Episcopal priest, Rev. Dr. Carter Heyward (one of the "Philadelphia 11" women ordained in 1974, two years before the Episcopal Church authorized ordination of women) to lead us in a conversation about her upcoming book, The 7 Deadly Sins of Christian Nationalism: A Call to Action (Rowman & Littlefield, September 2022). Rev. Dr. Heyward will address the rise of white Christian nationalism and offer perspectives for moving forward with hope and action.   Bangor Theological Seminary Professor Emeritus of Christian Ethics, Rev. September 25: Shared Worship Partnership-wide Shared Worship Service at 10 am at St. Saviour's with  Commissioning of all lay ministers and Baptism of "Charlie" Mace, grand niece of Tammy Bloom.    Island-wide worship with SMSJ on the fourth Sunday of the month will resume on October 23, 2022.  The loose plate offertory collection at this service will go to support the organization Maison de Naissance whose mission is to significantly reduce maternal and infant mortality rates in under-served communities. A check of this donation will be hand delivered by parishioner Rita Redfield in October at a meeting in the United States.  September 28: Join us for our monthly Taize service Outreach News Ways to Support Those Suffering from Violence in Ukraine Continue to pray for Ukraine and those in danger.  Collect for Peace from the BCP: Almighty God, kindle, we pray, in every heart the true love of peace, and guide with your wisdom those who take counsel for the nations of the earth, that in tranquillity your dominion may increase until the earth is filled with the knowledge of your love; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. There was a strong desire to focus our energies on promoting organizations that are helping those living in the Ukraine. Two organizations that are being recommended are:   Episcopal Relief and Development is working closely with Anglican agencies and ecumenical partners to meet the urgent humanitarian needs of Ukrainian refugees in Europe. People quickly packed up and fled Ukraine to safety and are now in need of basic supplies and will need long-term support. Your contribution to the Episcopal Relief & Development International Disaster Response Fund will help provide clothing, food, water and other items. For more information on this organization, including instructions on how to give, visit: www.episcopalrelief.org or call 1.855.312.4325 Save the Children: UKRAINE CRISIS RELIEF FUND Ukraine's children are in grave danger of physical harm, severe emotional distress and mass displacement. Save the Children is concerned for children caught in the middle of armed conflict, forced from their homes in freezing temperatures, and exposed to injury, hunger and cold. Your donation to Save the Children's Ukraine Crisis Relief Fund can help provide children and families with immediate aid, such as food, water, hygiene kits, psychosocial support and cash assistance. Updates: An area (not the whole worship space) will be marked off for Social distancing for those who want to sit in an area designated for this seating arrangement To protect the most vulnerable, masking will required at all indoor gatherings for all people in attendance. Note: Full vaccinations expected, unless medically prohibited.  Age 5+ eligible to schedule COVID-19 vaccination, Age 12+ eligible for booster COVID-19 vaccination and booster shots are available by appointment at the Community Health Center, Cooper Gilmore, Trenton Health Center,  and Carroll Drug Store. The Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine is the only vaccine currently authorized for children ages 5-17. Everyone age 12+ is eligible for a booster shot. You must be 5 months past your second dose of Pfizer/Moderna or 2 months past your first dose of Johnson & Johnson to receive a booster dose. A 3-dose vaccination series is Authorized for Emergency Use in individuals 6 months through 4 years of age. The initial 2 doses are administered 3 weeks apart followed by a third dose administered at least 8 weeks after the second dose. The vaccine may not protect everyone.
