St. Andrew & St. John's and St. Saviour's

March 30th is Laetare (Rose) Sunday

The fourth Sunday of Lent in the church calendar, Laetare is derived from the opening words of the Latin Mass, "Rejoice (Laetare) Jerusalem" (Is. 66:10). The church is called to joyful anticipation of the victory to be won. This joyful theme provides lightening from the penitential emphasis of Lent. Since the thirteenth century the paraments and liturgical vestments of the day may be rose-colored, expressing the change of tone in the Lenten observance. Laetare Sunday therefore may be called "Rose Sunday."

Similarly, the 3rd Sunday in Advent is also a "Rose Sunday," ("Gaudete Sunday"), named for the antiphon for the day which anticipates the upcoming joy of the Incarnation.

Portions from An Episcopal Dictionary of the Church

A Handful of Inspiration

"Jesus quests for us. His work is us. He yearns for us. But he does not take prisoners. We must be willing. We have to say yes. And saying yes must become our mission and our life's work.

Thirteen years ago, after being a Christian for many years before, I reached this additional decision point beyond our baptismal vows and the converted heart. I was in my study in New Jersey, praying out loud to The Lord that, unfortunately, I was having to repent again. "How many times, Lord, do I have to relive this mistake of looking up and finding that I have booted you from the driver's seat of my life? Shoved you into the passenger seat and taken over, left you on the side of the road, or stuffed you in the trunk? This does not work, and I have tried but failed to keep you as Lord. I need you to help me keep you behind the wheel. Life is better with you driving."
