College of the Atlantic President Darron Collins

A Human Ecological Education at COA:

Adventurous Learning on Mount Desert Island

Darron Collins is the first president of COA to be born after the college was founded in 1969. Collins, who has a Ph.D. from Tulane University in New Orleans, came to COA from the World Wildlife Fund, where he served as the organization’s director of creative assets.

He has served as a World Wildlife Fund managing director in the Amur River region of northeast Asia and as a senior advisor to the environmental organization’s CEO, and has helped lead the group’s outreach efforts. While at WWF, Collins helped raise more than $10 million in grants and donations. Collins earned his Ph.D. studying ethnobotany in Guatemala, has researched the Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, and has worked on leopard conservation on the Russia-North Korean border. He also has taught at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta. As a COA student, Collins received a Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and a Watson Foundation Fellowship. As a Watson fellow, Collins studied the environmental and social impacts of hydroelectric dams in Latin America. Collins is an avid fly-fisherman, mountain biker, and trail marathon runner.

MDI Episcopal Church Events

ST. JOHN’S:

Westside Food Pantry Fundraiser: The Quietside Helping Hands, Pemetic students, the Westside Food Pantry and Chow Mein are holding a fundraiser for the Westside Food Pantry, January 30^th at "Something's Cookin' On MDI" (next to the SWH post office). There will be two seatings: 5:00 and 6:30--$15.00 per person. Please call 669-2978 or email: info@somethingscookin-on-mdi.com to make reservations. All proceeds will go to the Westside Food Pantry. We have been asked to help with the dinner. They need willing workers for one hour shifts from 2:00-7:00. If you are able to work please be in touch with Floy Ervin, fervin@roadrunner.com

ST. SAVIOUR’S:

Feast of the Presentation (Candlemas) Service will be held on Thursday, February 2, at 5:30 with the Rev. Johanna-Karen Johannson as celebrant. Donations of baby blankets will be welcome.

Community Valentine Pot Luck Dinner on Sunday, February 12 at 5:30pm in the Parish Hall. All donations will go to St. Saviour’s MDI Fire Fund which benefits fire victims on Mt. Desert Island. Bring your family, friends, neighbors and a dish to share (if you can) with friends old and new. Beverages will be provided. All are welcome – with or without a dish!

Natural Causes Killed Victor: a folk opera, written by George Swanson, will premier on May 4 and 5. The opera relates the suffering and death of Maine prisoner Victor Valdez to the passion and death of Christ. Checks for tax exempt donations may be made out to “St. Saviour’s Parish,” memo line “Opera,” and mailed to St. Saviour’s Parish, 41 Mt. Desert St., Bar Harbor, Maine 04609. ST. JOHN’S and ST. SAVIOUR’S:

Spiritual Practices for Lent and Beyond is the topic for Adult Study on Thursdays January 26 and February 2 at 9:30 am (at St. Savior’s) and 1:30 pm (at St. John’s.) These sessions will focus on what spiritual practices participants are doing presently and possible ways to improve those practices. Also, the group may explore other spiritual exercises such as meditation, prayer, fasting, service and sacred study. Attendees are encouraged to bring pen and notebook. These Thursday sessions will be facilitated by The Rev. Johanna-Karen Johannson, retired priest, formerly of the Diocese of New York.

ST. MARY’S AND ST. JUDE’S:

Community Bible Study at the Neighborhood House Living Room in Northeast Harbor on Thursday mornings at 11:00. The Rev. Linda Hatch (Union Church) and The Rev. Patricia Robertson (St. Mary & Jude) will present “First Person: a study from the perspective of the characters in the Bible.”

Forum at 9:00 on January 15

Scott McFarland, Principal of the Mount Desert Elementary School, will speak on his experiences at the School, and on the state of primary education in general. Scott has been in education for the past 31 years, with 21 years spent at the MDI High School as a teacher and coach. Along the way he became the chair of the Science Department and later was tapped to go into administration and served the last three years as the Assistant Principal of the High School. For the past 10 years he has been the Principal of MDES.

He received a BS from St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish Nova Scotia in 1980 and later received a Masters in Educational Leadership from the University of Maine in 2002. He is a native of the island, having been raised in Bar Harbor and is 1974 graduate of MDIHS. He and his wife, Joy Lyons, and two adopted sons and a stepdaughter and stepson live in Somesville.

Given the person speaking and the topic, this would be a good opportunity to invite a friend or neighbor to join you for the Forum.

MDI Episcopal Church Events

For the first two Thursdays in January the group will read TS Elliot’s Journey of the Magi and discuss their own experiences of journey and why we journey and what do we seek and then what do we find.

Poinsettias: You are welcome to take one of the poinsettias that are in the church (after Friday, please).

Congregational Pastoral Care — CPC teams are now being formed. Through prayer, study of the book "Christian Caregiving-- A Way of Life" , and practice of listening and caring skills, several members of St. Saviour's and St. John's are preparing themselves to be witnesses to the love of God to those among us who may be in need. If you would like to be part of this ministry please contact Deacon Jenny (812-2365). The next meeting will be on January 11 at 5:30 p.m. at St. John's. Like Catholic and Orthodox Christians, Episcopalians are in touch with the ancient voices and aesthetic and spiritual practices of the Christian tradition. We are united by a common liturgy and by the Book of Common Prayer. And so long as we do the liturgy right, we are orthodox, and thus permitted a broad range of theological opinions. With its riches of liturgy, prayer, and music, it is for me a sacrament of the sacred, and it feels like home.

MDI-Haiti Connection — St. Saviour's Outreach Committee is moving forward with something that has been a goal for many Episcopalians and other Christians on Mount Desert Island-- a connection of love, caring, hope, and help between our island community and the people of Haiti. All who are interested in helping to establish and strengthen this connection are invited to a meeting at the Somesville Fire House on Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at 5:30 p.m. Presentations will be made by people who have had experience in Haiti and we will make plans for a course of education for ourselves and our communities concerning the ongoing needs, and the many vibrant gifts, of our neighbors in Haiti. One goal will be to develop a mission trip to Haiti from MDI for 2013. See you there!

Labyrinth Walk on New Year’s Eve

Friends and Companions of The Alcyon Center are invited to participate in their annual New Year’s Eve Labyrinth Walk in solidarity with labyrinth walkers world-wide. Place: The Alcyon Center; Time: Any time between 4:00 PM and 8:00 PM

Invitation: to walk the 9 circuit labyrinth in our backyard; to enjoy soup and bread and light refreshments; to meet other spiritual pilgrims and share a vision for 2012. Recommended: Warm clothes, sturdy and warm footgear, poles for balance while walking. Lighting outdoors: There will be candles in the labyrinth; bring a flashlight if you so desire. Men's Gloves Needed

One of Debbie Little's ministries is with the homeless in the Boston area. She began Ecclesia Ministries and has a website that will explain all about that ministry. Visit www.ecclesia-ministries.org for more information. This holiday season Debbie is requesting gloves for homeless men in the Boston area. If you would like to bring in new men's water-proof gloves, drop them off in a box on the back pew at St. John’s or take them to St. Saviour’s on December 18^th. The glove collection will last until Christmas Eve. Thank-you.

Holiday Musical Offerings. On Friday the 16^th at 12:15 Julia will present a program of organ music for Advent and Christmas. Joining her this year will be bass Paul Bartels. This is the 6^th year that Julia has put together a program for this season and she hopes it will be a respite from your hectic holiday preparations. Much of the music will be of a quiet and reflective nature. All donations received will go to St. Saviour’s Outreach fund.

Choir: Julia Morris-Myers, Organist and Choirmaster of St. Saviour's, would like to invite you to join the choir for the Festive Service of Lessons and Carols on December 18 at 10:00 am. Three anthems have been selected in addition to many beautiful carols. Rehearsals will be on Thursday evenings (December 1, 8, and 15) at 7:00 pm in the Parish Hall. It is important that you attend all 3 rehearsals so that we can be comfortable with the music and develop a unified choral sound.

Service of Remembrance and Hope: Thursday, December 8, at 5:30 p.m. St. Saviour’s will offer a special service of remembrance and hope. Led by The Rev. Dr. Debbie Little Wyman, this service is for all who have experienced any kind of loss (death, divorce, employment, estrangement, etc.) that make Advent and Christmas a difficult season. The service will be preceded by open forums discussing loss during the holidays on Thursday, December 8, from 9:30-10:30 at St. Saviour’s and 1:30-2:30 at St. John’s. All members of the community are invited to participate in the forums and/or the Service of Remembrance and Hope.

MDI Episcopal Church Events

Congregational Pastoral Care (a/k/a CPC). The first meeting for planning a Congregational Pastoral Care system for St. Saviour's and St. John's was well attended and enthusiastic. Everyone seems ready to do the work of preparation that is needed before we can share a ministry of loving spiritual care and friendship with all who may be in need in our parish and beyond. If you were not able to attend, you can still be part of this ministry. Just let Deacon Jenny know of your interest. The book "Christian Caregiving-- A Way of Life" is now available from Muffet at St. Savior's. It only costs $6! If you want to be one of a CPC team, or if you are just interested in incorporating more listening and caring skills into your daily life and ministry, please pick up a book and read at least the first four chapters (don't worry- they're very short!) before our first meeting on November 30th.

We will be alternating between St. Saviour's and St. John's for meeting sites. The schedule is as follows:

Preparing for Christmas: Discussions and Liturgy with Debbie Little Wyman, who says,

"Christmas was one thing when we were children, but we don't get much help or time to reflect on what it is to be in the midst of holidays as adults. Let's bring our joys and struggles with the season-- and the reality of our busy, confused, grieving, tangled lives -- into our experience of Christmas this year. This is time to ask the question, "what is the heart of Christmas for me?" and support each other in being faithful to that. We'll have open discussions at 1 p.m. on Thursday Dec. 1 and 8. Come to however many for whatever time you have. Our conversations will enlighten ourselves and together we will create a liturgy for the community on December 8 at 5:30 at St. Savior's in Bar Harbor."

St. Saviour's:

Transforming Evangelism continues on Wednesday nights through Thanksgiving, 6:30-8:00pm in the Rectory Common Library. Exploring this spiritual practice of listening and storytelling is important as we explore working in new ways with our neighbors on MDI.

St. Mary's and St. Jude's:
Community Bible Study at the Neighborhood House Living Room in Northeast Harbor on Thursday mornings at 11:00, starting December 1st. The Rev. Linda Hatch (Union Church) and The Rev. Patricia Robertson (St. Mary & Jude) will present "First Person: a study from the perspective of the characters in the Bible."

Church of Our Father: Holy Eucharist - Wednesday - 7 a.m. followed by breakfast, Healing service on 4th Wednesdays.

Advent Vespers Service – With joyful anticipation of the coming season, the Sea Coast Mission will have an Advent Vesper Service at 4:30pm on Sunday, November 27th at the Maine Sea Coast Mission headquarters, 127 West Street in Bar Harbor. The service is a contemporary, melodic, and participatory sung liturgy composed by Marty Haugen, and will include local musicians and singers, and though not familiar it quickly becomes an enriching and memorable worship experience. All are welcome, and there is no charge.

The Common Good Winter Community Meal events are back every Thursday, from noon to 2:00 p.m. The same great view, food, camaraderie and live music; come on down to 106 Seawall Road and bring your friends.

“Re-Opening the Bible”

Roger Ferlo

Professor Roger Ferlo will also be our guest celebrant on Sunday. He joined the Virginia Theological Seminary faculty in 2004 and is currently Associate Dean and Director of the Institute for Christian Formation and Leadership, and professor of religion and culture. A graduate of Colgate, where he now serves as a trustee, he completed his Ph.D. at Yale, focusing on the rhetoric of magic in the literature of the English Renaissance.

He was for six years an assistant professor of English at Yale, where he received the Yale Faculty Prize for Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching. He trained for the priesthood at the General Theological Seminary in New York City, and has served parishes in the dioceses of Georgia, Pittsburgh and New York, most recently for ten years as rector of the Church of St. Luke in the Fields in New York City. He is the author of Opening the Bible (volume 2 in the New Church’s Teaching Series) and Sensing God (both published by Rowman and Littlefield) and the editor of Heaven (Seabury 2007). He has also published widely in periodicals and on the World Wide Web, and has lectured at the College of the Transfiguration in Grahamstown, South Africa.

While in New York, he was a trustee of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, dean of clergy for lower Manhattan, and was elected deputy to General Convention in 2003.

He now serves as president of the Governing Board of the National Association of Episcopal Schools. His wife, Anne Harlan, a book artist, is the librarian at St. Patrick’s Episcopal Day School in Washington, DC, and his daughter, Liz Harlan-Ferlo, is a published poet, and chaplain and religion teacher at Oregon Episcopal School in Portland. An avid amateur cellist, Dr. Ferlo plays in the orchestra of St. Columba’s Episcopal Church in Washington, where he is a parishioner.

Community Bible Study at the Neighborhood House Living Room in Northeast Harbor on Thursday mornings at 11:00, starting December 1^st. The Rev. Linda Hatch (Union Church) and The Rev. Patricia Robertson (St. Mary & Jude) will present “First Person: a study from the perspective of the characters in the Bible.”

Christmas Bazaar, November 19, 9-2. Fresh Christmas greens for your table or door, crafts, white elephant & much more. Come join us for the fun and get your Christmas shopping done!

St. Dunstan’s Christmas Fair and Basket Bonanza – Saturday, November 19 from 9am-1pm, 134 State St. Ellsworth. There will be a large number of themed baskets being raffled and the Christmas Boutique will feature many unique, hand crafted items as well as a vast array of new and used products. There will be Rada Cutlery for sale, a bake table and a silent auction offering goods and services. A refreshment stand will be available serving hotdogs and beverages.

Advent Vespers Service – With joyful anticipation of the coming season, the Sea Coast Mission will have an Advent Vesper Service at 4:30pm on Sunday, November 27^th at the Maine Sea Coast Mission headquarters, 127 West Street in Bar Harbor. The service is a contemporary, melodic, and participatory sung liturgy composed by Marty Haugen, and will include local musicians and singers, and though not familiar it quickly becomes an enriching and memorable worship experience. All are welcome, and there is no charge.

The Common Good Winter Community Meal events are back every Thursday, from noon to 2:00 p.m. The same great view, food, camaraderie and live music; come on down to 106 Seawall Road and bring your friends.

Island Connections – Volunteer drivers are needed to deliver meals and groceries, to drive neighbors to healthcare appointments, and to shopping and community centers. As MDI's population ages Island Connections is getting more requests than ever. Often it’s just a short drive to a healthcare appointment or grocery store and back. Island Connections match neighbors' requests with drivers' availability and geographic preferences. Call Mary Parker at 288-4457 for more information.
