Wednesday ExplorersAn open discussion group that meets from 10:00 to 11:30 in the St. John’s Common Room, facilitated by Vesta Kowalski. We discuss different topic each week, chosen by the group. Anyone is welcome to come once, occasionally, or regularly; friends are welcome, too. Upcoming topics:

July 2 S/he said what? The first of our monthly first-Wednesday open forums to discuss ideas from recent or past sermons that you found intriguing, irritating, inspiring, provocative, puzzling, peculiar . . . anything that made you want to talk back to the preacher.

July 9 – I believe – or do I? We’ll look at the Nicene Creed word by word, talking about where it came from and discussing how its language does or does not convey our 21st century beliefs.

 

The Farmer’s Market will be in the St. John’s parking lot on Fridays from 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. This week they will be selling fresh strawberries!

 

FUNDRAISER:  Sunday, July 6th, 3:30pm; Violinist, Amos Lawrence, accompanied by Stephen Sampson, and Pianist, Lisa Lanza perform works by Sibelius, Elgar, Ravel and others.  A reception will follow in the undercroft.  This is the 12th recital in the Westside Food Pantry Recital Series.  Suggested donation-$15.  ALL PROCEEDS go to our food pantry.  Please plan to join us. St. Saviour:

Living in the Prayer Book Tradition in the 21st Century. A conversation facilitated by the Rev. Dr. Jenny Reece. There will be two meeting times:  Fridays at noon: June 27 and July 18 & 25; Sundays at 8:30 a.m.: July 13 & 27, August 10 & 24.  Each meeting will last one hour and include a brief devotional on Sunday's Psalm. You do not have to commit to the whole series. Come when you can. Copies of the BCP will always be on hand. Other materials will be distributed, such as the New Yorker article mentioned above (“God Talk: The Book of Common Prayer at three hundred and fifty,” October 22, 2012). Haitian Art Sale Planning Meeting: Monday, July 14 at 4:00 p.m. in the Rectory Common Room. All parishes are encouraged to attend and help. The sale is planned for Saturday, August 2nd in the parking lot of St. Saviour's Parish, from 9 am to 4 pm. There’s lots to do the day of the event so we’ll need all the help we can get. Call Marti Torbeck (522-8710), Diane Phipps (664-3204), or Linda Lewis (244-0005) with questions or if you can help but can’t attend the meeting.

 

Church of Our Father:

The Waste Not Want Not Thrift Shop is looking for clean and gently used children’s and baby clothes.  The ECW ladies also welcome helping hands to sort, fold, and hang the donations which are arriving every day.  Come by Thursdays at 10 am to lend a hand!

Classical Education: You may remember Aaron Hanson’s adult forum this spring on Classical Education and the new Mirus Academy opening this fall in Town Hill.  Mike McKenna will be speaking on the subject of Classical Education at the Seacoast Mission in Bar Harbor on Saturday July 12th from 6:30 to 8:30, with desserts and coffee beforehand.  Mr. McKenna has more than 10 years of experience in Classical Education and is the current Headmaster at Rockbridge Academy in Rockbridge, Maryland.  He will be speaking on the historical roots of Classical Education, an explanation of its method as well as how it challenges and develops the mind.

June 25 Looking forward – then and now. The early Christians faced a number of issues as they discovered they needed to move into the future without Jesus’ physical presence. Creating a “church” was the result, not the goal. We’ll talk about the issues the early Christians faced, and whether their answers can help us address the issues we face as a church in a changing world.

The Island wide Episcopal Haitian Art Show will happen in the parking lot of St. Saviour's Parish, Saturday, August 2nd from 9 am to 4 pm. All four parishes are encouraged to participate. With God's help, could your parish provide:

1.    Helpers before, during and after the show

2.    Drinking water to sell to visitors

3.    Pop-up tents to set up for the art

Job opening - Serendipity and the Bar Harbor Food Pantry are seeking an assistant to the Executive Director. The successful candidate should have experience managing a small staff, good communication skills, and some background in clothing retail. Strong organizational skills are essential. Position is 20 hours per week, pay negotiable depending on experience.
